Something I've been wanting to do is draw a turnout using Atlas c55 rail and NMRA clearances as I've yet to see a template or jig that creates a proper turnout.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

It's not possible to follow prototype measurements do to the flange clearance at the heel of the point.  On this turnout, I made the point rails slightly longer to get down to a 2.5 degree diverting angle.  Then I used the largest radius I could to the frog (~35.5").  This still made the distance between the tip of the point rails to the tip of the frog a little short.  But as I said, N scale clearances require some sort of compromise.

This is a #8 btw.

edit: added color to point and frog rails.

I added a trash barrel and some of the excellent pallets from @ITLA Scale Models Inc. to my team track loading dock:

What should have been an enjoyable Saturday afternoon project turned into a weekend-long project from Hell that is not yet complete.  From programming problems to headlight problems to speaker problems, this SAL GP9 is now running.  It just needs a speaker, which I need to order, to finish it up.  But, it’s running in stealth mode, which, after the fight this thing put up, is a victory.

Work progresses on the NYC flat and RDG gon from last week.  Meanwhile, another project I've started recently is a correctly-scaled GP35 shell that is the right width. I'd like to eventually make all the phases, but since I could use a CSX Roadmate I began with that (since it's less work :D).  The first test print came out great!  Just needs a few tweaks (like the fan housing is too thin to glue a BLMA fan onto and the the rivets on the dynamic brakes are too small to see).

Aaron was visiting this weekend.  Y'all got to see his drawing.... I got to see the first prints.
I'm telling you, I am very impressed.  He has some more tweaking to do.... but Wow- this is going to be a great locomotive shell.

Hopefully Ol' dad will have first dibs over anybody else.

Great execution.  Including the tighter tie spacing under the frog.

Does this mean you have a solid model coming for the frog itself in this geometry?  Would love to see those cast.

That's mind boggling.   I keep looking at the lineal feet of backdrop, fencing, hundreds of trees, and the 'open' scenery and it's earned a real 'wow'.
You must order your grass material by the cubic yard.    And nothing shows off good trackwork like mounting a camera where it can pitch and roll when out of surface or spiral.    Having been in that part of the California foothills, I fully realize what you're trying to do and it's very much the feel and spirit of the place.   Few can say their layout looks bigger in a cab video than on photos of the layout....

That's very kind, Randy.  And appreciated coming from you.  Makes all that work putting in the fences worthwhile.
But the camera is unforgiving...I saw at least one cow tipped, and many missing posts :-)

That came out really well Jim!  Beautiful layout!
What type of locomotive was behind the camera?  Its engine sounded a bit unusual (except when in the tunnels).

You're hearing the Scale Trains Dash 9.  There's a ST Tier 4 behind it.  Put 'em on just because they were the handiest and needed some run time.  Don't care for the Dash 9 sound as opposed to the T4, but my hearing sucks anyway.

Just rail at this point.  I don't think I could even manage space to do metal casting.  At least not until warmer weather hits.
