Bachmann USRA 0-6-0 Prairie

Bachmann posted a CB&Q painted version of their N Scale USRA "Prairie".
Got me to thinking a nice 3D printed part would be the Ash Pan Hoppers to cover the motor pickup bars and fill in the space under the cab.  A new Boiler Front with a separate Numberplate would be nice as well.  Maybe if enough of us upgrade our engines they'll bring it out in a Spectrum version....

Or add another driver. set  That is the most disproportionate looking 2-6-2 I've ever seen.

I really want that wheel arrangement but I don't want that one. I don't think I'm being that picky but it just don't look right, maybe a larger trailing wheelset with inside bearings as well as some ashpan improvements ?

Well it's really their USRA 0-6-0 model with a bogus pony and trailing truck added, so of course it looks funny.    That said, I still think it's too long for its wheelbase .  The front isn't too bad, but  cab, boiler and especially the firebox seem to have been extended to hide the motor.

No matter what, it will always be a funny-looking 2-6-2, 'cause that's not what it is.

Good idea. Logging modelers would like that size Mike.

As if I don't have enough on my plate, that is a good idea Charlie @ncbqguy . It's actually a pretty good representation of a USRA 0-6-0. I love rebuilding and updating these little loco's, and besides that, it's the one of the few USRA loco's that the B&O owned.

This is an older version when the motor still hung out of the cab. The newest ones have a can motor that at fits inside the cab and doesn't hang out anymore.

The length is right, it just needs the ashpan and details in the back to give it the feel of mass and weight back there. With that, the proportions feel better. I keep wanting to do an updated version of this loco with the newer frame, maybe its time.  BTW - the new ones also have metal spoke wheel centers instead of plastic of the older ones. It's a bit of an issue for the RTR market because the crank pins have been known to fall out since they no longer have the plastic hole to press into but a metal one which is less forgiving of improper tolerances.

Funny - the H0 version seems to have the same proportions, but they added the ashpan which makes the model look more realistic.  Ignore the pilot wheel!

I have three of the original version - mounted on Marklin Z 2-8-2s.  Cut the cab from the boiler, straight down, and stretch the firebox about 1/8 inch, and they make nice looking large Nn3 locos.  You'll have to make your own tender, or buy a shell from Republic Locomotive Works, but the conversion is simple.  Pilot and details are up to you.

Charlie, that is a fabulous idea.  @SkipGear 's detailed model compares really well to the USRA photo.  A good straight-on (or even close) builders side view photo would be perfect to proportion to the model's chassis.

I have found that it's not really about accuracy, but more so proportion.  If the proportions of the detail look good on the model, no one will know that the detail might be a couple n scale inches off from the prototype until they pull out the calipers.

For years Bachmann made junk...then they decided to start making a really good product (just VERY expensive)...44 and 70 toners, 4-8-2, 2-8-0, 2-8-8-4, single dome and triple dome tank cars, some nice (if very late to the party) diesels (SD-7 and 9 and GP-9 but Atlas had already done them and for much less $$), and several more that I'm probably missing. Then they started slipping back into their bad habbits...I was really looking forward to their 4-6-0 (the ONLY 4-6-0 out), but they used a terrible 'prototype' (some old time looking boiler and an off the shelf but WAY TOO LARGE tender...I don't believe that there is actually a prototype for this engine). Very disappointing (especially since I model the NWP that mostly had 4-6-0's but nothing even close to whatever this thing is supposed to look like), so it isn't surprising, but it is disappointing, to see what appears like they they are falling back into their old ways. Another ugly engine that probably doesn't have a prototype and a skirt that shows too much (for lack of a better term) leg (electrical contacts). Hoping that isn't the case, but their recient releases are looking like this is the case.

The 4-6-0 is a Baldwin standard design. Common on smaller roads. M&P had some with smaller drivers, MP and Frisco both had some via Texas subsidiaries.

There is a need for a bigger 4-6-0 to represent ones built for low grade mainline work before WW1 and that served in secondary roles to the end of steam.

I think it's just the tender that throws me off. The HO version looks really nice (I haven't really looked at it before now):

the N scale tender is...bigger than the engine...the proportions are all thrown off:

Maybe I'll have to dig one of mine out and try it with a smaller tender...Switching thread back to the mainline now.

Yep.  The Bachmann locomotive is pretty close to the Arcade & Attica #14, a Baldwin 4-6-0 built for the Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad in 1917.  A smaller engine, but typical of many built around then.

Has anyone attached a 4-6-0 or a 0-6-0 to one of the Bachmann slope back tenders? Would one of those be too short?
