Is the number board on the other side upside down also?

Very easy fix.  Take the shell off, use a toothpick to pop the number board out from inside, then put it back in right side up.

Just be sure when you pop it out you are over a large towel or something! The space underneath my workbench has a rip in the time-space continuum.

Thanks everyone, I knew it was relatively easy - I just thought I would share my amusement.  :D

I'll fix it when I get around to installing DCC or DCC/sound in it.

So the headlight and number boards are separate pieces?

Yes, they are backlit too.  But the older E8 shells had those molded with the shell.

Yes, they are backlit too.  But the older E8 shells had those molded with the shell.

But you can drill out the solid number boards on the old KATOs and buy numberboard parts from the company and upgrade the old units. You'll have to trim away or drill out holes in the inner light shield so the LED can light the boards too.

How do you know it's the number board that is upside down and not the engine? Maybe see if someone in Australia has a unit to swap with a similar number board rotation?

Fixed it for ya.

Nice  :D

Speaking of mold lines it looks as if Kato finally cleaned up the tooling a bit recently. This is (also?) a recent release:
