Chris, I really like that color, and most importantly, if I don't when I apply it, I'll be able to blame you!

I feel like I'm making serious progress lately. Over the past two days I got the track painted.

I started with a base of Raw Umber then dry brushed tan and gray over it to simulate track of different conditions.

You can see the effect here, where the siding is decidedly grayer than the main.

I also used some colored pencils to pick out a few ties for additional aging and then a brown marker to make a few look fresher. The glare kinda kills it here, but it might show up.

And painted track means I get to move on to ballasting, but the subroadbed comes first. And yes, the goal here is to show that the NCR was once two tracks, but now it is one.

If those are the presented options, I like thunderous, since that would best complement the prevailing sky color.

Adapting the meeks methods of track painting I see.

Do you treat the track with anything before painting? Primer/wash it/etc?

Cast Iron or Night Mission. They're both good, the other one is too light.

Ya know what? I didn't follow my own advice and as a result was getting it wrong.

Everything looked far too dead.

I've fixed it.

That looks fantastic with the additional green. The neat but not perfect ballast really adds to the scene too.
The fabric of reality has begun to fray.

Inspiring folks to give the dead season a try is one of my favorite things. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

Agree that it's a time of year with great potential, and often overlooked both in model form and prototype photography. A sunny day in late November can yield some fantastic images, but with or without sun you can get some terrific lighting, very moody. You do an excellent job capturing it, and for me personally I'm set in autumn, so I'll either do model in peak color or the dead season... assuming I bother with scenery at all.

Thanks, and yes, I agree 100%. I was just thinking about it, and I know I wasn't the first, but I was pioneering it back 15 years ago and I'm glad I did. There are a number of folks who do it even better than I do (Mike Confalone, and our own @bman ), but I definitely enjoy the way it sets my work apart.

I actually just saw two dead season photos in MR's Trackside Photos in the latest edition, so I'm thinking that might slowly be changing, but it's still far under represented.

Top drawer!

And that is the highest compliment I can get!
