I bit the bullet and Mr. Wallet isn't happy, well at least won't be happy come this summer.  :D

...But Mr. Layout no doubt will be, and that's what matters here.  :D :D :D

For those of you who are still interested in acquiring some of these outstanding models directly from ScaleTrains, the pre-order window is closing on March 2nd.

FWIW, I just watched a unit train on the Elkhart cam
On a standard autorack train.. (70ish cars)
I counted 16 multimax..  I think I saw 1 of each scheme from ST (except CP white).. and the rest were BNSF orange..

For comparison,
I saw 3 silver racks that Kato makes..
0 Articulated.
0 Auto Max (tall articulated)

Were the Kato style autoracks seen in the consist either CN or CP?

Speaking of the Johnstown cars... If I were Kato, I would ignore prototype and release a series of Safe-T-Pac Schemes..   They are equally as obscure as the Johnstown cars.. but more colorful and a longer time period.

What about the UP?

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3849425

Cool photo. Speaking of early enclosed cars, here's an N&W one from 1973: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4560328

I believe this was a "prototype" - note the DT&I logo.

These lasted into the 2000 (at least CP did).. but they were obscure enough that you rarely saw them in the sea of regular Autoracks.
There is also:
Auto Train*
Amtrak*
ATSF Brown
ATSF Brown Q Logo
NW Black
NW Brown "Norfolk and Western"
NS
SCL Family Lines
SBD Seaboard
CPAA Brown
CPAA Yellow "CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY"
CPAA Yellow "Beaver Logo" (I think)
WP (UP Yellow)

Both the UP and I assume WP were used to ship hay bails

Oddly Enough.. While I've seen the SSW Cotton Belt, I have 'NOT' seen Southern Pacific.

Nor have I seen a DT&I.

*I also learned the Auto Train/Amtrak racks were built by Southern Iron & Equipment, while I assume the others were built by W&K..

And I believe Kato's Phase 3 scheme would have been applied to the SIE cars, not the JAC cars.. (the SIC and Ex CN cars lasted into Phase 4 scheme)..
