But some of you guys are missing the fact that in the typical auto rack train there are usually only a couple of these around - they're still too new.  Only time you'd see a train of them would be a factory delivery.

I see these all the time in SLC. I've been wanting the BNSF and KCS variants especially as they stand out in a train. I might have to bite the bullet and get 12, almost doubling my current fleet of autoracks. Same price as a new Microtrain and almost the detailing of the Red caboose. oh man so much to buy and so little discretionary money

Is it stated somewhere that the discount only works if you buy 6-11 or 12+ of one road name?

No, you can mix and match roads to get the discount. But if you wanted 12 of one road, unless they are offering 3 different paint schemes, you are SOL.

I love how ST designed this car - the coupler box fits right into the center spine of the car (just like the prototype), rather than hanging from the underside, thus avoiding having to employ an underslung coupler knuckle. This also will give it a good ride height unlike the too-high MTL auto racks.

In actuality, the early production models are nearly seven years old, which makes them quite a bit more common in consists lead by Tier IV GEVOs.

I saw a train today led by a very dirty Tier 4 GEVO that had at least 6 of these auto max's in the consist. That would equate to maybe 20% of the auto racks in the train and the rest of the manifest were other freight cars.

They are more common than the Johnstown cars that Kato made.... and at least as common as the articulated racks that Atlas made.

Decisions decisions. I have 3 sets (12 cars) of the Intermountain/FVM auto racks reserved from the announcement a few months ago. Looking at their site the status is now in queu for production so it looks like they are moving forward.  I love the scale trains stuff, have a decent amount of it. Not sure what to do.

I think I like the details of the FVM better from what I have seen of both.

What would you do?

J

The Red Caboose/Intermountain/Fox Valley Models cars were/are only available  in bi-level configuration, while the ScaleTrains Multi-Max models are offered in both bi-and tri-level configurations with "era specific details including four (4) body variations; three (3) ladder styles; two (2) types of end doors; separate end door rods; three (3) end sill configurations; two (2) different upper and lower side panel mountings; inside or outside mounted brake cylinder, brake beam, and brake rod support mounting brackets."

While the etched metal panels were/are a nice touch, the best feature of the previously released Red Caboose autoracks was the optional version with open end doors, which is not being offered in the upcoming Intermountain/Fox Valley Models releases.

This is really a great announcement and I'm looking forward to them.

Is the multiple order deal for multiples of the SAME road name or mix and match on the total order?
I've put one of 6 different paint schemes in my cart and it's showing $44.99 each ($269.94 total).
1-5    $44.99/each
6-11 $42.99/each
12+  $39.99/each

Thanks!

Just spoke to Marlin at ScaleTrains, who kindly took the time to place a test pre-order of Multi-Max cars in a mix and match quantity.

The multi-car discounts are correctly applied once the preview order screen is reached.

This is really good news for those of us looking to purchase an assortment of road names with quantity discount pricing.

I'm not missing anything; in most autorack unit trains, these cars only constitute 10-20% of the autorack cars. That's why I only bought 4. But truth is, these cars are still being made and introduced into service while the older bi-/tri- level cars are gradually being phased out. But honestly, who am I to complain that N scalers are buying these by the dozens? That'll only help ScaleTrains' N scale figures in the long run and that's a good thing for all of us.
