God d**n it! On30 stuff too

I kept telling myself I was going to avoid adding On30 to my O scale interests because it was too deep and easy of a rabbit hole to get into.

And then I came across this thread: https://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/34770

And this photo

Dammit.

Ok, so I started looking for a Climax.

And then came across this.

http://www.backwoodsminiatures.com/0n3kits.htm

I'm pretty sure that's a pure flight of fancy, but damn do I want one.

I think the Backwoods Minatures guy is out of business? Or maybe it was bother supplier from the UK...this conversation kits made On30 very tempting.

Yeah, it's him. It's a real bummer.

But I have an eBay alert set!

Very cool @Ed Kapuscinski !  Much simpler era than your North Philly setting, and a chance to super-detail in the larger scale.

Damn... that Camelback is beautiful! It doesn’t help that the Camelback was my favorite loco as a kid when I first got interested in model railroading.

But I don’t have the room and it’s been discontinued.

Along time ago there was a guy who would run off and start modeling any shiny object that passed by. He liked On30 and did buy a Climax. A week later the bevel gears split and he found there were no replacements to be had. That Climax sat on his shelf for over 3 years until he found a group of people suing Bachmann and he signed up. About 1.5 years after that Bachmann finally started to get parts in stock and he fixed his locomotive. His locomotive now runs great, but the thrill was gone.

So if you buy one it probably needs new gears.

Try G scale, instead.

I'm looking for something to put under the Christmas tree and I can feel myself going down a hole that leads to a garden railway.

While I’m set to begin my own On30 layout, look at the godd**n On30 locomotive that is teasing me.  It’s an articulated 2-4-4-2 for only $139.99!  The ET&WNC floated the idea of purchasing an articulated at one point, so why not?  It’s even ready for lettering!

lol  I bought that exact same loco and did a few mods to it. Changed the tender and thinned the bottom cab base. Even made 3D sand boxes for the front:

My 2-4-4-2 is just as capable at collecting dust as the rest of my On30 stuff.  :P

Don't look, but the Heislers are on sale as well...

I managed to fight off the urge to purchase that 2-4-4-2.  The sound module cannot be found at any reliable sources, so I passed.  Sure, I could rip the guts out and install a much better DCC/sound decoder, but, nah!

Talk to Dave V. first.  He built a garden railway at his prior home, and I’ll bet he can talk you out of it.  It’s A LOT of work to keep running.
