Sketchup problem

I keep running into this problem on Sketchup where I zoom in on an area to get into some details and part of my drawing disappears. It is like I zoom in so far that the part that would be sticking out of my screen gets cut away. And this isn't letting me zoom in as close as needed. It is a pain.

Any idea what this is called so I can search for getting rid of it?

I have no idea. :?  I haven't experienced that problem.

OK, maybe...   :|

This looks something like what I've experienced when drawing with snaps to points or after repeatedly stretching and shrinking a feature.  It can look correct but in fact has generated various really short line segments, not necessarily perfect to a line intersection, and then when additional intersections are made it requires the features to have a very slight twist to them, rendering as small triangles that are attempting to fill in a closed flat surface, but one that is in fact slightly twisted.  Those get messy and only get worse when messed with.  Zooming WAY in sometimes reveals these subtleties if they exist, confirmed by snapping to points when zoomed WAY in.  Once one has gotten balled up  I've found that just removing all of the lines in the troublesome area and redrawing the feature from virgin points is the best, if not the only, way to fix this when it happens.

That might sound like a real problem but it's most likely to occur after a lot of subtle, small edits and by the time it's surfacing with the triangle problems I usually have the detail sorted, complete with good dimensions, so it is usually quick and easy to redraw with clean lines.

I don't know if that helps but it's all I've got at this point. :|

Anywhere I zoom in does the same, not just one area.

For fun I just drew a 1" cube and zoomed in on the corner. It did the same thing.

It is probably something I accidently turned on, but I don't even know what to look for.

On that cube that you drew, if you place a diagonal line on one face, corner to corner, does that fill in that face?  :|  If it does, that would be an indicator of the problem that I was describing.

Not sure I understand because all surfaces of a cube get filled in as soon as you close each section off.

Yes, but I was thinking of a void in one of the lines that was making it not closed.  A diagonal line might close at least a triangle, filling that face in, if that was the problem.  I'm really stabbing here as I can't think of anything that would definitely do what you're experiencing.  Could it be something where you've got a component or group command turned on that has this on a different layer, outside the group? :|  Again, just stabbing in the dark with nothing confident. :(  Sorry.

When I played with SketchUp few years back I  have seen something similar.  I think it zooms you past the outer wall of the object, so it shows the details of the inside of the object while cutting away the outside surface.  Like a cutaway drawing. I hope that makes sense to you and I don't know if it is a bug or a feature.

Having worked on a few different CAD packages, as a developer  not  a user, what you are seeing is the effect of the front clipping plane.  It means you have zoomed really close to your model.  It shouldn't affect the model data.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

I'll agree with George that it's a clipping plane issue.  When it does this, what happens when you do a view orbit (look around the model)?  Does the model stay centered in the window or does it shoot off the screen?

It does seem like the model will shoot off the screen at times.

So how do I stop the clipping plain? I need to be able to zoom in.

Well it looks like there are ways to fix it now that I know what to search for.
