For those who used Digitrax a welcome upgrade to the UT-4 throttle

Which ever side of the track I am on is the right side.

I really like my UT4 throttles. A majority of the time, I just want a simple throttle to run a train so I need a toggle for forward and reverse, a knob for speed control and a few function buttons. I don't need a plethora of confusing buttons and  full programming abilities on all my throttles. My main complaint is that their isn't an indication whether a function was on or off. This new throttle should solve that problem !  Also more functions are accessible !

Bill,I agree, this could be a very interesting throttle.

I wish Digitrax would come up with a new version of the DT300. I liked the ability to control 2 consists simultaneously with the utility throttle size versus the larger DT600s.

An improvement in every way, from the screen and 21st century push buttons, to the detachable Loconet cable, on/off switch, and AA batteries.

I don't know why everyone hates on the 9v batteries.  I have about 6 rechargable ones that I use for my throttles.  I only have to charge them about every 6 months or so when I'm not using them on a regular basis.

I don't understand what the problem is.....

It's good to see them listening to feedback!  I'm happy there is an on-off switch and they kept the directional toggle!

Whenever I operated on Digitrax layouts, what I liked about the UT throttles was the potentiometer-based speed control.  It has stops at zero and full speed.
This new one uses (probably endlessly spinning) encoder knob.  This looks to me not to be a utility throttle, but a small version of  a full blown throttle with a full numeric keypad.  Nice, but no longer UTilitarian.

Being an NCE guy who sprung for a couple of UT4Ds for op sessions for me and wife at the club and friends' layouts, I was disappointed at the lower reliability of the duplex UT4D compared to the simplex UT radio throttles.  We too often lose loco control for no obvious reason - and then regain it for no obvious reason - but after too long a wait time for ops.  So, I am waiting to hear if the UT6 somehow fixed that problem before spending any more on Digitrax throttles.

What type and brand?

I've always found that rechargeables don't keep the needed voltage and lose that ability even more so over time.  But maybe if the Digitrax doesn't really need a full 9V then it wouldn't be the case.

Also, what if you are using them on a regular basis?

These are both 8.4v pre-charged NiMH batteries that have a usable storage life of around 2 years and a 175-200 mAH rating.

You can get something fancy like these:

Fully 9v and over 3 times normal capacity due to them being Li-Io. Would last for years in storage.

Don't want to get a Li-Io battery because you need a special charger?

This one has a built in micro-USB port for charging!

I'm using the EBL 600 mAh ones for more than a year and love them.  I use them at multiple train shows before recharging.  Since they are lithium they hold their charge too.

I think the function buttons around the side are funny looking.
