Patricia's father grew up near Philadelphia along the Main Line (and later Easton) so he's a huge Pennsylvania Railroad fan.  When Patricia and I started dating at Penn State, eventually the conversation rolled around to interests and when I told her I was into trains and model railroading she sort of rolled her eyes a bit and then laughed...not at me but at the notion that women fall for men who are like their fathers.

Every now and then we'd have a "train date" from Penn State such as a dinner train on the Bellefonte Historical Railroad, a day trip to Raystown lake that included a stop at Orbisona and snooping around the East Broad Top Rockhill Yards, and an Altoona trip to the Curve.

She's not a railfan but she appreciates my interest in trains and indulges me.  She understands this hobby is my connection with my father and that it grounds me.  She also appreciates the creativity involved.  I was actually classically trained as an artist; charcoals, oils, sculpture...  I did a lot of pen-and-ink and watercolor as well.  But honestly my favorite medium is model railroading.

Nevertheless, I'm lucky.  We're both geeky, and geeky girls are the best.

I was living in Wyoming, and unfortunately (LOL), got divorced. As I had four bedrooms and a den, I opened floor plan, and had a giant train room (both smaller BRs, plus the Den).  Finally, I was King of my domain, and started doing framing.  A month later, I was transferred out of the Country, and sold the house. So I got the mine, but ended up with the shaft. Good luck on your new layout.

In 2016 my wife came to me and told me to leave the house within 30 days...I put all my things and went to a new appartement with room for a small layout I built in the weeks after that, in 2018 I saw her the last time on court and came out as a "lucky, smiling guy"...and drove directly to a hobyshop^^

I am very glad that she told me that, I found a very nice woman, we live together and modeling is really therapeutic, I wish you all the best for your future.

The last six months have been a unique challenge for me, I have not even had the motivation to move Playa Desnuda inside to my home office/loft, even though there is a perfect place for it. I have been thinking about building the new roundy round, Arroyo Tortuga a lot. I have all of the crossings and switches for this little layout…

This week, I pulled the trigger and I purchased the Woodland Scenics Town and Factory Building Set, and I am looking at ways to build/print interiors and add lights.

The best thing about this is that I have found the turret building in Los Angeles!

Next up is choosing what colors to paint the buildings….

Very glad to see that you are getting back to doing some modeling...and it's about time. Some of us use seeing what others are doing to keep the motivation going on their own modeling. Welcome back.

thanks, I can't wait to figure out how to make the interior...the girlfriend suggested making different lights go on and off in the same building

There are a bunch of Shapeways N scale interior parts out there.

Some of the buildings have interiors on Shapeways and other 3d printer sites. Some people have printed interiors up and put them inside. Others build something out of styrene. Check out search and I believe you will find some examples...
