I put a light coat of road weathering on the PA's; I'm going to call them done for the time being.

DFTTB to coin an acronym , almost everything project winds up with this status at least once . It's never done till we sell it , then the onus is on the new owner .

However, modeling progress was stymied by an unplanned trip to Philly.

I had some time to kill downtown so I did a bit of sight seeing.

While this wasn't the lowlight of the trip, this was somewhat heartbreaking to see. This is the remains of the crazy thing that was Canal St.

Interesting how they remodeled "around" it to mostly disguise its origins. You can barely see the boxcar ends, but the real giveaway is the sidewalk lighting. Surprising that the city grandfathered the boxcars into the renovation plan, as a lot of image-conscious communities - you know, the ones with street signage low to the ground (so you can never find what you need!) - would do everything they could to get in the way of developers of proposed Victoria Station locations. Argument was they didn't want their community to host what amounted to a future scrapyard should the concept fail, etc., etc. "They" were right, basically.

When I was going to school (Claremont Colleges), there was a big brouhaha about somebody wanting to develop a similar railcar-format restaurant. What the city zoning authority did to scuttle the project was make an over-the-top engineering requirement for deep anchors to allegedly prevent the railroad cars from tipping over in the event of an earthquake. This was '73 or '74; the ploy worked and the whole project was cancelled as too costly - 3X original estimates IIRC. I can guess in hindsight they drew from experiences of other communities that had pushed back and learned what the winning hand would be.

I worked at a Victoria Station in Michigan as a saute chef one summer in the '70s.  It was demolished decades ago.  Wonder what they did with the box cars, er, dining rooms.

I'm not really sure what is going on with the forum's photo uploading, but the picture was tack sharp until I uploaded it.

that is truly sad.
while some parts of philly seem to be rebounding into life
others are just decaying away or knocked to the ground and fenced in

@wazzou  - is there an article somewhere on what you did to make the NP single sheathed car in front of the GN car?  I'm arguing with myself over whether that is a heavily modified 1970s era shell with a bunch of new parts, or maybe a Fowler kit from one of our friends north of the border with steel ends, or entirely scratchbuilt.  And kudos on ladder shadows.  Whatever you did, nice contrast to the USRA cars that manufacturers are so fond of.

Sorry, no article on the NP car.  It is made from resin castings of a scratch built master for the sides in combination with OEM Roof, Ends and Ladders and commissioned CDS dry transfers.
