Weekend Update 10/11/20

I'm trying to make my Kato Lark cars look a bit more prototypical.  This is an easy fix that at least helps them cosmetically.  I painted the roof, underbody details, and trucks black.

Here's a comparison between a Kato sleeper that I've made the changes to (top) and a Centralia Car Shops sleeper (bottom)

Here's the Kato diner and observation car after alterations.  While the cars are not prototypical (mostly Union Pacific prototypes), this at least gets them in the ballpark.

Three things going on this week for me:

1) Side two of my MEC boxcar is done. Just needs stirrups and coupler pockets, then its ready for paint. Edit: It need the door runners as well.


2) Been working on a model of a Great Western 0-6-0 saddle tank for a friend. To complicate things he wants it to be broad gauge and I decided to add working inside motion. 4mm/ft or 1:76.



3)Finally got the XJ-S that I bought back in March on the road. Just in time to put it away for winter. Should free up some modelling time though.

This is a combination of Kato and Centralia Car Shops rolling stock with Kato power.  While most of the cars are not prototypical for this train (most of the Kato cars are Union Pacific prototypes), I made them look more correct by painting the roofs, underbody details, and trucks black.  It's a decent stand in for the train.  Working on the prototypical triple unit food service car for the train next.  A slight dusting of weathering to bring out the truck details and numbers in the locomotive number boards and it will be close to finished.

3)Finally got the XJ-S that I bought back in March on the road. Just in time to put it away for winter. Should free up some modelling time though.

Welcome to the joys of Jaguar ownership; if you are in the U.S. and haven't yet sought out your local JCNA club, I encourage you to do so.  I am hoping for a break in the rain so I can take mine out for one more run before putting it away for the winter.

Tried out a Photon about a year ago, hated using the thing with how much of a hassle washing parts ended up being.
So I put in an order for one of these back in August.


Gotta say I'm pretty impressed, the N scale Jersey Barrier was done on the finest detail setting and is comparable if not better than what I could get with the Photon.

I'm still on the fence (using Shapeways in the meantime) and the resin toxicity/mess/smell is one reason I haven't pulled the trigger yet on a home printer.. seems the way things are progressing, the PLA printer may be a viable option.  Looking forward to seeing some additional prints you make on your Prusa Mini.

Overall I don't think I'll be using the Prusa beyond simple details and more functional tools, but its still pretty decent for stuff that isn't right up in the foreground. Some of the more obvious lines in the this structure will be covered when more details are added.

I've always wanted one of these engines, but I could never afford one when one was available.  Not to mention the perpetual mountain of projects I'm under from N scale alone. 
Well, the stars finally aligned and I took the plunge!  It may just be a display case engine for a while, but the plan will be *drum-roll* HOn3 Freemo modules!

I remember a long time ago, following the journey of the late Wolfgang Dudler building the Silver Valley RR modules.  I've mentioned before, my first Free-moN module is based on Salina.  I'll once again take inspiration from Wolfgang, along with many others including @Dave V for sure.  I can barely wait, but I'm forcing myself to finish that Plattsmouth bridge first!

Meanwhile, deep in the Retro Forest, I found this...


A whole slope of lichen!  We were hiking in a park in West By God Virginia when I happened upon this bonanza... so I scooped up two good sized clumps, one a little lighter than another.

Following the recommendations of the assembled Asshats among us, I cold soaked them in a solution of 25% Glycerin 75% water. for a couple of days.  It emerged from the goo today, and is comfortably drying now.



I also scooped up some mud shale while we were there.



I'll be working on some more scenery on the Retro layout soon!

I got an Elegoo Mars Pro a couple of months ago, and have been using Anycubic plant resin - grey and black - with success.  The smell is definitely much more acceptable, and less toxic.  Quite expensive though.  The prints need a bit more exposure and curing, and come out a little rubbery (which can be quite useful).  The Elegoo water washable stuff is quite poor and disposing of the toxic wager is a pain - at least IPA evaporates and can be filtered and reused.
