Like the title says, I'm looking for instructions on how to remove the cab glazing and light shield from a Kato F40PH. I believe my two are from the first run (item #106-6201, Amtrak Phase III #333 & #339). I have the Wutter DCC board and ESU LokSound Micro v5 and am curious if I can fit 0402 LEDs inside the cab roof. I'd like to be able to light the strobes and number boards, but without removing the components I can't see how little space I'm working with.

Basically, you just need to gently pry it out. I use either a jewelers screwdriver or fine tweezers, and start releasing around the edges

I don't have a shell in front of me but this is how I remember. 1st step is to remove the strobes ! Not sure if the light glazing is clicked into the cab light shield, if it is remove this next. The cab light shield is clicked into the cab glazing on both sides, to take it out you have to widen the shell a bit with two fingers and use tweezers to gently pull the light shield back and slightly upwards at the same time. That should do the trick. But remember, remove the strobes 1st  ;)

I believe it's in two parts too.  It was a total pain to get out.

If you end up breaking some, Kato has replacement glazing available on their parts store. Guess how I found that one out...

So far I've been unable to remove any of the cab glazing. The parts are stuck fast. Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll keep trying and hopefully get it out w/o breaking anything!

If you do break something, don't get discouraged, I broke 5 of 6 of mine in at least one point before I figured out where the tabs were. The conductor's side tab is about 2/3 of the way to the rear of the engine, the engineer's side tab is right in back of the cab. If you put a screwdriver or other small object in there to pry them out, that might do it, but this unit in particular is difficult. I am not replacing the broken glazing in mine until the very very end of the decoder install process when I know I will not need the shells off again.

IIRC, for the front of the locomotive you remove the headlight light pipe first being careful not to break the little nub that holds it into the cab light shield. Next, pull/pry the cab light shield straight towards the rear of the locomotive while slightly pushing the windshield/side window pieces outward. There is a little detent on each side of the cab light shield that locks into the two pieces on either side. After that is out of the way, the two windshield pieces should pop out if you pry on them towards the rear most side window.

For the rear of the locomotive, pry up on the light shield and it should pop out since it is only being held in place by a couple "pins" that lock it into place. Once that is out, just squeeze the rear glazing inward slightly and it should come out without too much hassle. It is held in place by a couple ridges inside of the shell. Hope this helps.
