Weekend Update 10/4/20

Finally got around to putting the Next18 adapter boards in my Kato F units, or two of them at least, as that is how many speakers I had on hand.

Back when I volunteered with Character Counts, I would do a lesson for the school kids called "TV is a time waster"...  Here now, for your viewing pleasure, is Episode 3, more evidence to support that theory.  (Nevermind the title that says Episode 2... that's a cognitive comprehension test... I hope you studied!)

First off a fairly ubiquitous car north of the border, slab side hoppers. @Angus Shops makes a really good looking kit for these cars in a couple of different hatch styles. A while back I completed one up in CPR block lettering, and it turned out great. That said, I always planned to have a few in CNR paint. To that end I have been lobbying Black Cat to produce appropriate decals for years (gently nudging him with reference photos and such).

Great job on the slab side hoppers!  I have suggested to Angus Shops that he consider offering the CP/PGE version of the eight round hatch car with welded sides.  I would be interested in doing some CN cars but need a decal set for the CN noodle scheme . . .

Angus Shops is currently celebrating a “last spike” event, having closed the last 5 foot gap in the mainline and running the first train from staging to staging. Although the track was thoroughly tested as it was planted and there was no surprise that the first run was almost flawless, it’s still a good feeling. As William Cornelius Van Horne said at Craigellachie in 1885 “All I can say is that the work has been done well in every way”.

I’m a little tired of laying track; it’s quite likely that some model building is in the near future. BCR 570 and I have been discussing the welded hopper and the CP/PGE/BCR 8 hatch ice reefer. The welded version of the hopper is pretty straightforward.

It says out of stock but I believe its just that they haven't arrived yet. He was staggering production.

@Angus Shops, congrats on the last spike! That will be a great railfaning layout when its all done. Ooooo, I would certainly be in for 8 hatch reefers! A couple GHQ CNR 8 hatch reefers are already in my fleet, but can one really ever have enough? An express CP 8 hatch reefer in tuscan... now we are talking!

As for baby CNR5529, well it must be a good sign that her favourite bedtime book right now is "The Goodnight Train", right?

Right scheme; wrong car.  THe set is for hte older six square hatch cars; I need a similar set for the later eight round hatch cars.

My weekend project is mild by Rail Wire standards. I added safety rails to a Roundhouse tank car using .025 styrene rod. The trucks were also updated with Atlas 100-ton trucks.

Got back to work on my Pier 78 structure on my CP Rail Philadelphia module. I had to flip it around so that this is now on the pier side rather than water side, and it will be almost flat building on edge of layout.

Haven't had much train time in the last few months, primarily because of the arrival of our first child.  Sleep deprivation aside, everyone is doing well.

I'm not familiar with the Next18.  I hope this isn't a dumb question but what exactly is this and how is it used?

Thats a cool car, certainly looks similar. Interesting how the ends of the side sills angle down somewhat towards the center of the car.
