Think you need the Tomix TM-04 that is no longer made.

I have the Tomix TM-04 thinking the exact same thing. Gear towers are too tall.

What about tiny fans blowing out the windows?

How about scratchbuiliding the mechanism using Kato NW2 or RDC trucks.  Those are very low-profile, and should  be readily available. Plus, being Kato, they are very smooth running.

When those models came out they were static and the Tomix drive was made to fit them. Never tried it though. So they don't fit?

These are Shapeways prints, nothing was ever made to fit them.

While the height of the gear towers in the trucks I recommended will likely not be a problem, those shells seem to have very narrow hoods. I wonder of the width of the gear tower will be a problem.  Let me see if I can dig out one of those trucks and check the gear tower width.

The hoods are .340 ID

Lots of room for a nice fat motor though.

F*** yeah!

In reality, have you looked through the selection of trucks for stuff from Bachmann? I feel like maybe Peter Witt or some other trolley trucks might be a good starting point. Then fabricobble together a mech?

I have a few Peter Witt cars, I had thought about that but the wheels are too small, (the real ones were 36') and they are the wrong truck wheelbase. If I feel the absolute need to make them move I will exercise that option.

Oh, what's nice about those Kato trucks I mentioned is that the worm and universal coupling is integral with the truck. So all you need to do  is run a driveshaft from the truck  to the motor (and the drive shaft might be included with bot types of truck).

RDC trucks have small wheels (probably 36") but NW2 wheels are larger. However, you might be able to replace them with 36" passenger car wheels.
