As far as diesels go, these are both cool looking and full of history.  If the D&SNG needs to use diesel road power sometimes to stay relevant, I get it and I'm okay with it.  I'd rather see two shiny rails all the way to Silverton than a rail-trail.

I'll be curious how they paint them.  I have a G scale version that I was planning on selling, but I may hang on to it now.

I believe they're going to get a "Rio Grande inspired" black and gold scheme, but that's all I've read, so the result could be almost anything.

No, I doubt that they'll look like that.  I suspect that it will be Grande Gold, probably the same yellow used on the passenger cars, to match the trains.

Those are the new hybrid engines, they run on either diesel fuel or coal.

The D&SNG already revealed their new scheme.  Grande Gold with the same Tuscan used on the private cars on the back of the trains...and speed lettering that says Durango Silverton (minus any ampersand or the word "and").  It was pretty universally disparaged by the railfan community, but I suspect that's mainly because it's different.  I would have preferred something more historically D&RGW, but I have to remind myself that the D&RGW is gone and the D&SNG is not the D&RGW.

Doesn't sound bad, and, as you say, they're NOT the D&RGW.

The Cumbres & Toltec had the same problem several years ago.  They put their web address on at least one loco, and the "historians" had a fit.  But the CATS isn't the D&RGW, and after running the line as long as they have, why should they be expected to look exactly like it.

As I said before, if the D&RGW (UP) was still running the narrow gauge as a freight line, it wouldn't look anything like it did in the 60s.

If that's it, then with good reason. That scheme is largely a ripoff of the garish "popsicle" paint on the Morrison-Knudsen U25B rebuilds for SP:



I don't care if the orange is the same color as their coaches, the 1970s graphic treatment is totally out of place. Do something like pinstripes against the burgundy and then it's not too awful. Gold pinstriping would be better. The speed lettering is as much as an anachronism. If they're trying to be "historic" in the narrow gauge sense and considering they're making their money from portraying history, don't screw it up with modern designer $#!+.
