Huh. I did not know about these.

https://www.fiferhobby.com/bachmann-gp-38-2-locomotives/

Finally a smart choice, and good call with the road names.

But that's an odd choice for a CSX paint scheme.

Anyone seen one of these things?

But that's an odd choice for a CSX paint scheme.

I like it.  It's known as the YN1 scheme, and it's one of those intermediate paint jobs before CSX finally settled on its YN2 (hockey stick) scheme.  It certainly spruced up the otherwise blasé (and possibly dangerous for poor visibility) stealth scheme.  A YN1 scheme would add some variety to an early CSX fleet.

Yep, that’s my understanding of the YN1 scheme. Visibility improvement and before they bought enough yellow paint to do the YN2 scheme. 😃.  Also blue paint.  Joking aside I do like the YN1 scheme as you don’t see too many models ( in n scale) with it.

If these are going to be anything like their most-recent run of GP40's, I think they will be nice little units. Side-by-side, I couldn't tell the new GP40 apart from an Atlas, and they even had speaker holes in the fuel tank for those who want them to make noise.

CSX info....

Actually, by the drawing, it's not technically the YN1 scheme.  (though it IS kind of confusing.).  And a LOT of people get this wrong on the internet.

The presence of the blue stripe at the lower body is the giveaway that this is not a true YN1 loco.

A true YN1 scheme was a  scheme designed brand new.  There is no blue at all at the bottom of the body.
You will also notice that the steps are gray- not blue.  And the pilot is black, not blue.
Here is an example:
http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/photos/GP38/2009CSX-y.jpg

And here is all of the examples:  http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/paint_CSX-y.htm

What Bachmann is painting is actually accurate- it's just not the YN1 scheme.

When CSX decided to go hi-visibility, they made all new paint jobs in a new scheme.
If the loco was not having a totally new paint job, then they just slapped yellow paint on the ends and sills of existing schemes- no matter what the scheme was (so there are all KINDS of variations).

So what Bachmann is painting, is a classic early CSX scheme loco.  In fact it was this loco:  http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/photos/GP38-2/2503CSX-b.jpg

And then you can see that CSX just applied yellow paint to this existing scheme.  THIS is what Bachmann is making.

By the way.... this is why I LOVE to model CSX 1986-2000 (Conrail merger).  I can model 100 different paint schemes!

Dark future is boring.

Addendum:

And actually, to date, there has only been one N scale locomotive produced in an accurate YN1 scheme.

And that was the Atlas B36-7.....

Which..... (drum roll)....
Started right here on this forum years ago.

Atlas took the info from this forum and pressed forward with that release.

Yeah. That does seem a bit high.

And did you see the min radius?
Why would a GP38-2 need 11 inches?  Maybe the big old boxing glove sticks out so much it derails stuff on 9.75?
(not that I would even want to have 9.75" curves)

Assuming they use the same chassis as the GP40, the fuel tank will likely be horrendous.

I hope they do better this time (GP38-2), but we'll see if they bother to fix it.

Yet again, Atlas beats Bachmann to the market with a better detailed, lower priced model..
(in my memory it was the C40-8W, but apparently a GP40 as well)
