To answer the question no. I'm an apartment dweller and N scale allows me to do more in the limited space I have. I do get my HO fix taken care of by visiting a friends HO layout for the occasion operating session. I even get to be around some 1/8 scale live steam from time to time. In the end just go with what you think you will enjoy. That's what matters.

I'm an apartment-dweller too. I enjoy running big mixed freight trains, and N scale feeds my need to run longer trains and do some switching. The portability of N scale makes schlepping my trains to and from the Bay State Model Railroad Museum and NENTRAK shows a cinch. I do have space at the BSMRRM to store trains there, but I haven't visited in a while due to the COVID-19 situation and the distance (BSMRRM is closer to my office than my home, and the office is closed). I definitely need to take some time off...

I do have a few pieces of HO scale left over from when I was younger and less experienced. Most will be sold but I will keep a few to run at the BSMRRM's HO layout. I also have an O scale 3-to-2 locomotive project that I'd like to complete for the same reason- to run on BSMRRM's O scale layout. They stay in their boxes when I'm not tinkering with them. I am installing some shelves to eventually display them.

Well the trip to our local shop here in Addison, Texas was as always entertaining and informative. I took a hard look at the track for HO, the locos, the cars, and the buildings.

All of it was awesome except when I was looking at it and picturing it in my space, just as some others have said, it ain’t gonna work. I know ai can make HO work in the space I have, but compared to what I have got going on in N scale, there’s so much more I can do with the smaller scale.

So, I’m going to look for some good HO locos and some cars and give that HO club a call. Will probably build a module so I can run with them and will continue to enjoy my NScale along with it. I think thats the option that’ll get it done and scratch the itch for both. Might even build that TTrak module since the club does both.



You’re all right....the best choice is the one (or two, or three, or even four) that keeps you running trains and smiling. Thanks for all the input and encouragement.

I've been tempted from time to time, many things are soooo much easier in HO (I am building a small HO layout until I move next year).

But, I remain a dyed in the wool N scaler.

I have been going through the same thing.  I keep getting an itch to do something different.  I have been building N scale layouts for most of my life and it just feels right, but there have been times I want to do something else.  I have dabbled a bit in G, Z, HO, and HOn3, but N still remains my mainstay for now.  That might change eventually with age.  We will see. 

I currently have no layout as I tore out the last one to redo the train room (only 10x10).  Really been tempted to build a HO switching layout, but I can't do half of what I want in the space I have unless I build in N.

In reality my collection is so large I would have to open a virtual hobby shop to sell it off, just not worth the effort. Another reason why I have stayed away from DCC.  The cost and time to convert would be all of my hobby activity and that is not how I want to spend it.

 Yea, I've been a rubber gauger almost all my adult life. Beside the all the n scale stuff, I have a lot of 20.3 and HO (standard and narrow gauge) as well. Then there is some On3 stuff too.

And I'm still going in the opposite direction, having dabbled in Nn3.    That makes N scale feel like HO!   Man, this N stuff is HUGE.

I also jump back and forth between scales. I’m mainly n but I also do HO and Z and hope to do some Nn3 over the next few years. There’s not a wrong scale, they all have good and bad. One thing I’m drawn to in ho is the availability of resin freight car kits. Those are a ton of fun for me. I have a pile of Funaro and Camerlengo kits and a pile of Bethlehem car works kits with brass sides to do.

I really wish there was an equivalent to Funaro and Camerlengo in n scale. I have a few trolleys from them.
