Finished the Rattlesnake Mine scratchbuild. I’m waiting until it’s installed to figure out the tailings dump trestle that crosses the spur in front.

Looks great, Dave!

Now, I'm going to ask a dumb question.  What is that large metal block with the holes in it in the background of your picture?  I've seen a number of :ashat:'s using those blocks, presumably as weights or a third hand, but what is its designed purpose?

Thanks,
DFF

1-2-3 blocks are awesome for everything.  Perfect 90 degree corners and well weighted (but ventilated, so--for example--you can use them to weight down wood you've stained to keep it from curling, yet it'll breathe).

So much modeling being done, I found my thread on page 2!

Anyway, two more for the CMRy 2.0:

Saloon from Wild West Scale Models for Aspen. The young boy looking in the window has been sent by his mother to retrieve his father...again.

I scratchbult a model of an actual structure that stood in Aspen for many years.  Plans were available online but I did have to create a custom decal.  As much as my model of the Colorado Midland is essentially a fantasy, I like that this structure will help anchor my caricature of Aspen, CO in real history.  It's 100% styrene except for the paper metal roofing from Wild West Scale Models.  I weather the roofing with spray primers and an alcohol wash.

LOL...  It's already finished in my mind!   :D

Sorry, these Old West style structures are just too much fun to build!

I know Chris was joking but he's right... It's high time to get some track laid.  Five inches of foam support the lower loop of track.

Tomorrow I'm hoping to start in on the roadbed.

Dave - Fantastic little buildings!  I dont know how you can model in such a small scale,I struggle at time with HOn3.  I can hear Captain Kirk saying More Maganifacation Scotty!

I had to look for the Aspen lumber plans myself - thanks for mentioning they are available.

Looking forward to seeing more progress, but you need mountains then build a railroad throgh them.  That layout resembles eastern Colorado  ;)

And....  Cork.

Roadbed is installed for the lower track loop. Much of the far right corner will be excavated for a large trestle 5” in height representing the Hagerman Trestle on the east approach to Hagerman Pass on the Colorado Midland.

Well Faaaaaar Out!*  For the last two months all of Dave V's pics have just been an empty wireframe. I could right-click on them and see but by default, nothing showed.  The pics before that were fine.  Now today all the pics show up. Just in time for roadbed! Yay!

That’s because I had been lazy. I was simply linking to my public Facebook page for the layout. Facebook likes to change image URLs at random. So today I sat down and uploaded all of them to my Railwire gallery.
