For the most part I just leave it without fixative. Sometimes, depending on what it's being applied to, it can stain the surface.

I tend to avoid stuff that's not fixed in place. Me being me, it's eventually going to move around and go places where I don't want it to go. YMMV.

Almost finished with my "Lil Joe Project". Some touch-up paint, dry-brushing, a touch of weathering powders, and adding the engineer. And, bonding the drooping front coupler! The photo's I have of the prototype show that the critters didn't get as dirty as steamers out on the road so I don't wanna go overboard with the weathering.

Action at the PRR paint shop:  2 F25 well flat cars, and a GRa gon (TrainCat):

Next stop lettering.  Also made progress on the ship’s propeller load for the F25:

Andy, I use slide switches for turnout control and I’ve found that, with a little care, the slide switch’s fixed mounting base can be covered with ballast or groundcover (weeds), and the slide switch knob itself can be painted to blend in with the surroundings so that the whole arrangement almost disappears.

With regards to Spookshow’s brilliant scene, all I’d like to offer is my approach to gravel roadways and such is to not worry too much about the colour, but concentrate on getting the texture right to begin with. The colour can attended to later with an airbrush. The airbrush can give you exactly the colours and variations you’re looking for.

Mark:  Yes, I misunderstood "boneyard".  Your usage is basically what I was thinking of!

And, most of the elevators I've seen did have the vehicles "neatly disorganized", just as yours are.  They're not perfectly straight, but obviously aren't just scattered around.  After all, they need to be able to get them out, without moving everything else, when they're needed.

The same goes for railroad shop areas.  Many modelers have way to much "stuff" scattered about, where it would be a trip hazard, or just hard to find when needed, in real life.

The very last short section of track is gluing down. Now to connect the last three feeder drop set to the bus, and track and wire for segment 1 will be complete.

Trust me, powdered chalk is unlikely to move once it's been applied to a rough, porous surface.

Took advantage of the good weather yesterday to shoot a couple of photos of my modular layout. More photos can be found on the layout thread.

Depends on if you're the kind of person who sees a bit of stray shmootz on the layout and blows on it to get rid of it  :D

Gorgeous! Makes me want to tear my layout apart and haul it outside for a photo session....

I'm guessing that the track is quite happy that you chose glue, after it saw the track nail you would otherwise be using.

I'd love to see you blow away powdered chalk that's been rubbed into a rough surface... Seriously, the stuff won't go anywhere, even if--or especially if--you wanted it to.
