I am in the process of building the station at Kingman, AZ out of styrene. The building has a stucco exterior, I have sanded a test piece and tried to blott on some spackling with a brush, but it will not stick to the sanded surface. New area for me, what are your best ideas for creating a stucco exterior? thanks in advance guys!!! Gordon

I've seen a lot of military and larger scale modelers use something this as a base coat then repaint:

Plastruct makes stucco styrene.  I think it looks great.  I used it on my Park Hotel's first and third stories.

When I was trying to make some concrete bridge abutments, I used a makeup applicator sponge (the triangle shaped ones) and dabbed the acrylic paint.  As the paint dried, the texture got finer.

Wow!! great ideas guys, Andrew I love the hotel, did not know they made that stuff! Jason I may give your idea a try as I already have the walls done with all windows and doors cut. Had some 0.60 styrene laying around and figured I would get started. John I know the restaurant!, Kingman is one of my switching towns, and the depot will be a signature structure and nothing is even close as a stand in. thanks guys, Gordon

I used the dab technique on the hathaway (https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=31099.msg343090#msg343090).
Scoll down to bottom for pics.

Yea .. if you are going to do Kingman -- you have to do the station .. also, the steamer and water tank ..

Will the NUCOR steell plant be included?

I was going to say the same thing. In smaller scales you don’t need a lot of texture, and a brush and some thick paint is good enough.

I got decent results years ago dabbing white out onto the styrene with the brush from the bottle.

I like the sponge method even better I think, though.

John, yes both 60' water tanks and the city water tower are being modeled, but mine with be black with the Santa Fe logo. All of my industries are already named, most of my industries are named for friends in the railroad community that have helped on the railroad or that I have looked up to. Gordon
