On the subject of trees, vegatation, etc.,how do you preserve naturally found items to use for tree armatures and what not?
 I know it involves glycerin.

Not necessarily from my experience. With a notable amount of items all you need to do is just thoroughly dry them out in a low humidity environment. It takes a while, like 6 months or so with larger/complex items but its effectively free.

With non flammable stuff you can even use an oven on low heat to kill off any bacteria/micro organisms.

But with the stuff where you can't just dry it out, an HO modeller in my town claims its a 50/50 Water/Glycerin mix. Which is then also dried out.
