Not to add to the temptation for a headlamp, but with all those fluctuating magnetic fields, would a small induction loop pick up enough power to light an LED?

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work. The loop would have to be well outside the influence of the magnets on the bottoms of the cars, as they would likely squelch any useful effect the field fluctuations from the track might create--and even then, I suspect it would be pretty feeble.

Wonderful!
I would suggest a more "retro" solution...  Remember those clear crystal "gems" they used to put in the headlight lenses of Arnold steam engines?  You don't need something that makes light, just something that catches it and throws it back.

You know, like Buck Rogers' Rocket Pistol... :D

And your engine driver looks exactly like the curmudgeonly type that holds children in great disdain, but loves being the captain of his ship, so he puts up with the noise and sticky seats...

Just a thought. The ride as it stands is still awesome!

Excellent suggestion. I'll see if I have any...

My thoughts exactly, when I picked him out!

It's just a part-time job to supplement his social security, but, he'd give anything for the opportunity to travel clockwise once in a while.

Oh, I used to volunteer at a 1:1 narrow-gauge railroad with a loop of track and one train that forever circled it counterclockwise. I think this sentiment is shared by anyone who served as an engineer there!

Shouldn't they turn the entire consist around and go the other way at some point to double the wheels' life from wear?   :D

Yes, they would if they could. But there's no way to turn anything.

The very last special effect for my very last layout? We'll see...

This morning I was struck with the idea for another one of those "always wanted to do it" effects: sunset/starry sky. Although I made a nice sunrise/sunset effect for the White River & Northern IV, a starry sky has always posed a problem for big permanent layouts: the backdrop is invariably part of the room's walls, which doesn't provide the opportunity to install stars (other than UV paint/light tricks, which aren't very convincing). But the Mountain Vista is a totally portable layout having a freestanding backdrop with which I could do just about anything.

For the sunset, banks of various colors of LEDs would cast a warm glow across the horizon that would slowly dim to reveal the stars. Basically it would be just one portion of an otherwise impractical full day/night light cycle.

For the stars, my thought is to embed short fiber optics in half-inch Gatorfoam, and mount 0402 SMD LEDs on the back side of the foam. I'd use different sizes of fiber to create a variety of star sizes/brightnesses. Using discrete LEDs would also provide the opportunity to employ modified flickering circuits to imbue the stars with a subtle twinkle effect. Also, I'd use transparent paint to lightly tint the LEDs so I wouldn't have all the same color stars.

I think between the starry sky and the field of fireflies, an almost dreamlike environment could be created. But, we'll see; it's still early days, and I'm not totally sold on the idea yet.

One of the custom car TV series we watch hid a star field headliner in a van using fiber optics. Very effective.

So you've had about 10 hours or so to work on this sunset/starry night idea.  Are you done yet ?  Where's the pictures ?  :D

I've been dividing my time between this and the fireworks display, which now looks like this:

...and it's still about 104 wires from being done--that is, the LED wiring being done. Then I need to wire the chips--that'll be another 565 connections...
