Perhaps less of a micro challenge, but a useful opportunity for the O.P.E.N sign would be a slightly larger radio station sign up on the backdrop.
I had ideas of including this on my WM layout, as high on the hill overlooking Cumberland is the glowing marquee of WTBO, which operates on a similar circuit  (the letters appear sequentially, then flash off then on together.)
The closest I got was assembling the letters, unlit, on the backdrop of my Cumberland module.  (It's there by the hand-drawn radio tower).

If there's no room on the backdrop, you could incorporate the effect into a roadside billboard sign, but I'm sure you'd have a challenge shoe-horning another project in.

Thank you! Not sure if it's possible, but at least it's a useful (and adult) suggestion.

I’ve got one that would be era appropriate, even timeless.

Shopkeeper flipping the Closed/Open sign. Doesn’t have to be one hanging on the door. Could be one in the corner of a big shop window, since those were usually larger and more aesthetically-diverse signs anyhow.

Manhole cover popping up and miraculously returning to position.

Person jacking up and lowering a car on a roadside (any era)

person front-cranking an old Mack truck and startup sound

Person digging a well without an auger

cigarette or cigar burning on a sidewalk

Child flying a kite by the meadow (kite moving and rotating with the "wind")

person push mowing (rotating shear) a small plot of grass

So I actually kinda need some of those for Bridesburg. Not stogies, but fusees though.

Nice assortment. This one in particular was done by my friend Rick Spano, and I'm inclined to upvote it as a distinct possibility.

I like this one too.

Shopkeeper flipping the Closed/Open sign.

I like this. Very subtle, and that's my preferred kind of animation. Upvote for this one.

Someone fishing in the river casting their line - or at least moving their rod as if they are casting with it.

Do you have a repair station if so maybe a car going up on the lift?

What about a women putting wash out the widow that would be really neat!

A cat chasing a mouse LOL just kidding but with everything else you have done I would not put it past you 😁
Actually thinking about it maybe a dog chasing a cat around the corner of a building?

How about the busty mistress at Weldon's Cathouse pulling the window blind down for some "privacy"?  ;)

That was also going to be my suggestion. I made one of those years ago, for friend's layout.  The fishing rod was made from a thin brass rod, and the fishing line went through a hole in "water", and attached to an arm of a small 12V relay under the layout. Then there was a timer circuit which occasionally energized the relay for a split second. The movement was very small and subtle, but noticeable. Unfortunately that layout was dismantled earlier this year.

Interesting. That's another one that Rick Spano did, and it might just be another upvote...

Coal on a conveyor belt filling the delivery truck.

Coal being dumped down the chute at a business

Filling the coke machine

Coke machine dispensing coke

Cement coming out of truck into a form

Water coming out of fire hydrant

Fireman raising ladder to get cat from tree

Water leaking from crack in pavement(broken main) to flow down storm drain.

So there's this driver, see... changing a flat at the top of the hill. And the spare gets away from him and rolls to the bottom of the hill.

You could animate him cussin' up a storm, tossing the lug wrench to the ground, kinkin' the side of the car... which falls off the jack.

(Sorry dad. I thought it was funny.  :D )
