Thanks DKS - very helpful.

On a whim I decided to try an experiment: solder leads to an 0201 warm white SMD LED—specifically, solder a piece of brass rod to one terminal, and ultra-fine magnet wire to the other, to make an old incandescent streetlight. I actually chuckled as I hooked up the test power supply, wondering why I even tried. Then, if I hadn't seen the outcome with my own eyes (and had two witnesses), I wouldn't have believed I could do it. But there it was, glowing away. So I made a second just to be sure it wasn't a fluke, and it wasn't.

Congratulations! Soldering 0201 LEDs leads is something I have not tried yet (I already have bunch of 0201 LEDs on hand for future projects).  I bought them from Digikey and Mouser.  But I have not found any warm-white ones yet?  Where did you find those? EBay?

0201 LED footprint scales out to 3.2" x 1.6" in N scale.  That is pretty close to a standard 1:1 light bulb size!

That street lamp is really amazing!  Can you say a bit more about how you made it?

Man that all is so cool. I love watching the movement on the gates and the lights on them!

No, I said "Ed's Law."

Thanks! I'll go into more detail when I get more lamp shades. I'm all out, and I have more on order. No knowing what month they'll arrive...

Just seconds before reading this I read an e-mail from Tichy saying they are all healthy and shipping orders everyday except for Sunday. I always get orders from them fast.

Good to know.

So, today I continued modeling the bar-restaurant (Phil's Bayou Another), starting with the tables—all five of them (it's a cozy place). They're the kind with the cast metal base—you know, where you're always stuffing napkins under one corner to keep it from wobbling. These were made from bits of fine brass tubing soldered to strips of etched brass kit fret, and trimmed to size.

I used tubing so I could install 0201 warm white SMD LED "candles" on the tables.

Then I made the bar, which is just strip wood assembled in an L-shape and topped with some black styrene. The stools are just regular straight pins. I also added a tiny stage at the back corner for a jazz trio.

All of this will be viewed through windows, so the crudeness and abundant flaws will not be noticeable.

Still to come will be ceiling fans (moved from the hardware store), chairs, detailing and figures. I'm also thinking about installing a smoke generator. Why? Well, this is a 1950s jazz bar. Imagine if you will: the trio is warming up, the patrons are settling in with their drinks, and what are nearly all of them doing? Should make for a neat light show with the fans going and all...

I love the table candles, and I think the smoke generator is a great idea, but I have feeling that after few operating cycles the entire interior will be coated with an oily film (which would actually be prototypical for a 1:1 establishment where smoking is allowed).  What a nasty habit!

I think it'll more likely be "Ed K's Black Dog Shop"...
