Fyten Furniture

Been working on this for awhile now. I've made quite a few revisions and some of them don't show up in some of these renderings.
Some of the changes are window and door locations.
Windows, doors, corner moldings, and other details will be printed on the photon. The walls will be cut on the laser out of 1/32nd thick .040 scribbed basswood. Notheastern Scale Lumber only has clapboard siding in 1/16th thick and I want to use 1/32nd thick stock. With the thicker stock, it harder to hide the corner joints.

This will be the track side dock.

Wow!  That looks really good Rod!  Is the model based on some prototype, or just freelanced?

As far as the windows or doors go, why not use some existing injection-molded or metal-cast parts (like from Tichy, or others)?

  Pete,

 It's freelanced.

I already had the windows and doors printed from another project, so I made them work.

Here is the final layouts ready for cutting. I'll be using Northeasten, 1/32nd thick, .040 scribed basswood siding for all the walls. Before I cutting, I'm sealing the basswood with oil based sanding sealer to keep the walls warping when painting. Roofs will be cut from 1/32nd thick basswood sheet. I haven't decided what shingles I'll be using, but leaning toward shakes.

Here is the foundation that will be printed on one of the FDM printers. The dock areas will use 1/32nd thick, .025 scribed basswod.

This will be a very nice addition, Rodney. I especially like the way you’re combining different but appropriate materials for the walls and foundations.
The roof, depending on what kind of overhangs you’ll have, will need something more than a flat sheet with shingles. Maybe wood fascias with supports on the gable ends, and rafter tails along the sides? This is my favorite peeve with many models, including commercial kits; the roof sheathing can’t just hang in the air without some sort of support. But I’m sure you knew this already...
Hmm, I wonder if the tedious rafter tail detail could be 3D printed as a narrow strip to be glued on the underside, and the fascias added to your siding sheet?
Have fun,
Otto

 Otto,

I envision more of a fascia over the rafter tails, so I won't be modeling them on this structure. To do rafter tails like 2X4''s and 2X6"s is hard as the sheeting that is used is in most cases, is thicker than the scale rafter tails. I have some different ideas for some I'll be doing later. Now that being said, what I'm going to try, is cut the tails out on the sheeting and then use something thin like paper for the sheeting over the whole roof.

The roof sheeting will be cut like this, and then add a sheet of paper over the sheet so that I'll have something to glue shingles to and to have some support over the rafter tails.

Rodney, that’s what I’m talking about! Looks great! As to the size of the rafters, that would vary based on span and spacing, right? I would guess that on a span of this size, 2x10’s at 16”or even 24” centers would not look out of place. Or even 3 or four by’s, farther apart....That’s 1/16” thick material. But yea a fascia is a legit  solution, too.
Btw, your doors and windows look fantastic! I may need to beg and plead for a few... :P

It's glued together and painted a grayish brown. I'm ready for windows and doors.

As I was going to sleep last night, I was thinking of getting this all together and realized that all the windows I had were in the closed position. I'm modeling late July through late September in 1953 to '55. So, I would want to think that some of the windows would be open. The great thing about making your own windows is that can be done.

I guess I need to print some more windows now.

Those were draw on 16" centers with 2X4's. 16" and 24" centers are the most common.

Do you plan to make it a kit?

Yes. Goal is to have 10 ready for the N Scale convention in Nashville. I have enough wood on hand to do 2 or 3 right now, but need to get the shingles figured out before I order any more stock.
