Is ESU 54689 LokPilot V4.0 Micro Decoder MM/DCC/SX Next18 Interface the correct decoder for ST GE's?

Shell removal?  Easy? Is coupler box/coupler one piece, or does coupler come apart when removed???

Thx!!!!

Unless you really need the multiple protocols, you can save a buck or two by getting just the DCC version (54686)

Thanks for the tip....

This decoder has no wire harness, it just plugs in, right?

I presume you can press it in underneath the board without removing it????

Yes, just line up the Next18 connectors and press it in. No wires involved

Just found this thread.
I also have a ScaleTrains ET44AC (Tier 4 GE) that needs DCC.
Now that we have established 54686 is the non-sound decoder, what about sound?
Is there one that pops right into the Next18 connector?

Anyone know if ScaleTrains used a decoder that's available via retail?

I did some searching and found this one: ESU 58828 "LokSound 5 Micro NMRA DCC Sound Decoder - NEM662 Next18 Integral Connector"

@ryan_wilkerson - that is the one to go with.  Bryan at SBS should be able to load the correct sound file for you (don't think you ever got a LokProgrammer).  If you need any help, you know where to find me

Thanks @RBrodzinsky, I don't have the programmer but I'll ask Bryan to load when ordering.

Thanks John for the correction. Looks like I got the v4 and v5 mixed up.

So for sound...on the N Scale Decoder page on the ScaleTrains website, they list two (not sure if these are both for ET44AC): https://www.scaletrains.com/product-category/esu-loksound/
ESU 58828   https://www.scaletrains.com/product/esu-loksound-5-micro-dcc-blank-decoder-next18/
ESU 58429   https://www.scaletrains.com/product/58429-loksound-v-5-0-sound-decoder/

From sbs4dcc:
58828  $89.95  https://store.sbs4dcc.com/ESU58828LokSound5MicroNMRADCCSoundDecoder-NEM662Next18Integral.aspx
58429  $85.95  https://store.sbs4dcc.com/ESU58429LokSound5StandardNMRADCCSoundDecoder-NEM66021MTCIntegra.aspx

The 588xx series are the lok5 MICRO decoders that fit n scale.
The 584xx series are bigger lok5 decoders (not micro) these will be too big to fit n scale more for HO scale locos.

See link for details.

Hope this helps

This is what I installed in two of my Tier 4s and one of my Dash 9s. You solder the speaker to the top of the OEM board.

Chris, did you buy the DCC-ready version of the locomotive and install a separately purchased 58828 (from ScaleTrains or other source)?
Did you have to buy a speaker or did it come with the loco? If purchased, which one fit?

Ryan I can hopefully answer your questions. I just did one of six of mine. I ordered 58828 from a vendor. Just. Are sure it is a micro. You have to supply your own speaker and make a enclosure to fit the space for it in the fuel tank. Pretty straight forth. I looked at spookshow site that shows where the speakers connect just to verify what I thought
Oh if you get one of the v5 with a dongle you can cut off the clear coating and un plug the dongle so that you can snap the decoder into the on board connection

Ryan see this.

This is an install I did in a dcc ready ST dash 9.  Will be pretty much identical to doing a ST Tier 4.
