N-Scale magazine's Walt Huston in need of your prayers

Last night (Saturday) I received this e-mail from Pamela Clapp (publisher of N-Scale magazine) and wanted to inform everyone here that N-Scale's editor, Walt Huston, is in need of your prayers right now.

Loren Perry

Hello,

I wanted to send you all an update on Walt. Many of you were aware that Walt was going in for back surgery on Nov. 19th to help correct some problems and help rid some of the problems that were causing him pain.

He came out of that surgery  and went to rehab afterwards to get his strength and mobility back. He unfortunately has had two long, extensive surgeries since then. The last surgery was done after the nurses at Madigan were moving him and dropped him on the floor, which paralyzed him from the waist down and he can not walk. He will be going to Good Samaritan hospital on Monday to one of the best hospitals in Washington state for spinal cord injuries.  He is currently at Madigan hospital until Monday.

He asked that I let you all know. I’m sure he would love a phone call or visit.  He let me know it was alright to call him. His cell number is 253-691-0798.

I can’t even believe this is happening. I spoke to him before Christmas and he was coming home on the 22nd of December.

Please give him a call if you can or visit. I know he needs the company and uplifting spirits.  Good thoughts and prayers.

Just beside myself in disbelief.

Walt Huston,

So sorry to hear of your health issues.  The nurses DROPPing you on the FLOOR = Inexcusable!!!!   Get a lawyer and sue.

Wish you a speedy recovery.  My thoughts are with you.

I'm with Pamela...complete shock.  Walt's one of the good guys.  Worked with him for some years now, always had a great relationship.

Prayers on the way and they will continue - and for his good wife.

Reinforces my feeling that if you want to get sick, go to the hospital.  Or in his case, a rehab center.  My wife had something similar happen after a surgery and has had problems to this day.

My day will come, I'm sure.  Not looking forward to it.

Thanks so much to Pamela for letting you know, Loren, and thanks for posting here.

@Pamela Clapp please let Walt know we're thinking of him.  If there is anything I can do to help with the magazine in the mean time, copy editing, correspondence, what have you, please let me know.

I've known Walt for over 30 years.
I haven't spoken to he or his wife Nancy regarding this but I did just speak with a mutual friend about the situation.
I'm not clear of the timeline in Pamela's synopsis but it does sound like Walt is regaining some feelings in his lower extremities.
I'll see if I can't learn more this week and pass it along.

SO SORRY TO HEAR THIS. SOME OF THESE NURSES THINK THEY CAN HANDLE ANYTHING. I HAD A THERAPIST IN THE HOSPITAL DROP ME INTO A HARD CHAIR & CAUSED A COMPRESSION FRACTURE IN MY NECK.
I WISH HIM WELL.

Walt Huston,

……..The nurses DROPPing you on the FLOOR = Inexcusable!!!!

Many years ago, Dallas Stars star player Mike Modano got hurt and stretchered off the ice.  Upon loading into the ambulance, they dropped him and the stretcher and 16,000 fans gasped in unison.  Not funny, and only marginally related, but if it makes Walt feel any better to be in such good company, relating the story may be worth it.

Hope he is doing well, even though I only know him from his many contributions to N Scale (magazine and in general).  Hope 2020 is a better year for him.

I want to update you guys on Walt's condition. Yesterday N-Scale Magazine Advisory Board member, Pete Sanchez went to visit Walt and sent out an email. Walt is at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Wa.  He is undergoing ae said they had a good visit and Walt expects to be there for another 6 weeks. He is undergoing a busy schedule of Physical Therapy and occupational therapy. Walt said his feet feel "fuzzy" sometimes and they will twitch once in a while, which gives him hope that things will get better.
Coincidentally, one of our MRNS club member's wife works in that area of the hospital and may even work with Walt. He will keep us updated on Walt's progress.

whoa, I'm sorry to hear this.

"fuzzy" feet is a good sign though.    Wishing him all the best from Minnesota, and hoping for continued improvement.

I received this late message concerning Walt's situation and am passing it along:

All,

Walt looked really good today when I visited.  He actually looked rested if you can believe that at a hospital.  He is slowly making progress, he's able to move his left foot just a little.  Again, slow progress, but progress just the same.  A contractor is, or will soon start building a wheel chair ramp at his house and widening the interior doors to fit his wheel chair.  Which I must say is kind of fancy, I think it's got more adjustments than some power seats in a car.  He's expects to be released from the hospital at the end of the month and has  not ruled out going to the Monroe show.  They took him to PT while I was there, and when they were getting his set on the machine I did see his right foot move on it's own.  More good signs!!
