Question of the day... Why does the post office have so much junk laying around the building..

Well, you know these rural types. Why throw junk away when you can just pile it up outside instead? Although to be fair, I took that picture 10 years ago and for all I know the junk has been cleaned up. Thing is, it's kind of hard to tell

For a moment, I thought this was one of your fantastic model shots. Glad I figured it out before I took an ax to my layout. :RUEffinKiddingMe: ;)

Lol, thanks. It's easy to tell the layout photos from the proto photos - if the greenery looks real, it's not my layout  ;)

Rural folks never throw anything away because it may be needed in the future.  It's often a long trip to buy it new, and costs money, and takes time, so why not reuse what's already there?

I'll bet that, if you went back today, there'd be about the same amount of "junk", but it might not be the same stuff.  Folks have taken some, and left some, and and after 10 years, it's likely "turned over" at least once.

A few of the Modutrak guys got together at Marshall Skibbe's house today for our annual winter fun run and bull session.  Thanks to Marshall for letting us run on his and Mike's beautiful Chicago Great Western layout.  I snapped a few not very high quality photos with my phone of the Texas Special that I've been working on and my recently weathered BLI Mikado.

These two cars are my first attempt at some oil paint weathering.  At this point i have a fade wash and a dust [ Guests cannot view attachments ] wash on them.  More dirt and rust to come.

Is that corn?!  What was used to model it?  What color paints were used?

It's made to simultate corn.  If I remember correctly, they used a Japanese version of astroturf.  :)

The first RS-18 is pretty much done. I just want to replace the handrails (stanchions have been ordered and the rest will be made from wire) and add a Tsunami. Here it is at Dawson Creek, BC (with a photoshopped sky, all I have is a module in my living room with no backdrop).

I found an excellent deal on a RS-18 and RS-3 on eBay so a second RS-18 and a slug are in the works.

Say, wasn't there a steam locomotive with that roadnumber or something?

That looks extremely realistic (color, texture), at least in the photos.

Hi, all,

With the year end 2019 holidays upon us, I have a bit of time to visit here and see all the great work everyone is doing.

I thought I'd add my favorite locos.  I like all my locos, of course, but my favorites are the one-off's that I with my limited skills, were able to do the work myself on the shells/mechanisms, with much help/ideas from friends, of course!

The URL below the picture leads to each loco's photo documentary on what I did (I document because if I don't document it for myself, I'll never remember what I did (especially as the years go by....), in case I ever get asked "what did you do" or if I ever decide to do another one :) ).

In order of completion:

---------

Santa Fe GP7 B unit  - Des Plaines GP7/9 B unit kit ( http://www.desplaineshobbies.com/store/product/43003/N-GP7-9-B-CONV-KIT/ ) on a standard Atlas GP7 shell/mechanism, completed in Jan 2008:

https://pbase.com/atsf_arizona/gp7b_construction&page=all

-------

Southern Pacific Black Widow SD7's - took 8 LifeLike SD-7 mechanisms to arrive at 4 that I was able to tune to run to my standards, in process learned to disassemble/reassemble the LifeLike SD7 shell and tune that particular mechanism (ping me if you have questions about what I learned), did the renumbering/numberboard on #5321.  Yes, these prototypically need to install SP barrel headlights which I have acquired but yet to install.  Completed in late 2008:

https://pbase.com/atsf_arizona/lifelike_n_sd7_shell_removal__renumbering&page=all

---------

Santa Fe U30CG's - redone Minitrix shells on Kato U30C / C30-7 mechanism, completed in 2012:

https://pbase.com/atsf_arizona/santa_fe_u30cg&page=all

----------

Santa Fe RSD-15 - redone Model Power shell, handrails by Randgust, on a Atlas B40-8 mechanism fitted with Atlas C628 trucks, completed in 2015:

https://pbase.com/atsf_arizona/n_scale_rsd15&page=all

You can do a faster even better build of your own RSD-15 or RSD-7 nowadays, using Dirk Jan Blikkendaal's (of The Netherlands) ATSF N Scale Models kit for the RSD-15, I have one of his conversion kits and can vouch for the quality, the good instructions, the well thought out method he provides.  His kit well worth it:  http://atsfnscalemodels.com/projects/rsd-15, rsd-7.html

------------

Happy Holidays, all.  Let's build a lot of models in 2020!
