I went to Trainfest last month and was asked to post some pics. I was overwhelmed with the amount of model railroad stuff there. I joined the Burlington Route Historical Society. I took tons of photos and will post some more in a bit. There was one layout that really impressed me and and blew me away. I found out it’s w neal’s Galesburg layout from right here at the Railwire.
There was a module that I really liked and has potential for me to make it into a switching layout set in the 1950’s-70’s

Hey Darryl = thanks for the video update; great as usual! I hear you about the dangers of using the black powder for weathering - I completely over-did my roads with it. Like you, this is my first crack at making and weathering roads. I'll have to wipe down the roads with a wet rag and try again. What paint are you using for the roads and the sidewalks? Also, for all those little bushes along the right of way - what are you using for those? I'm using super trees and am pretty happy with them, but I need a bunch of undergrowth and want to try some different materials. Thanks as always!

Getting the layout into a magazine was never a goal...
I had two goals when I started the project in April of 2008 and those were: Get it to the point where it could be considered "finished" but more importantly create something that reminded me of what railroading was like in my youth (in this case August of 1970).

Few things scream Southern California than palm trees. I picked up 5 JTT palms that are 3.5 inches tall….I really don’t like palms, so to the rear they go.

I’m making progress on the Relco MOW train. 6 cars and an engine painted yellow so far. I still have the control car from the other end to paint. Once this dries to satisfaction, the gray starts.

After waaaay too long of a period not working on my layout, I finally got going again. This weekend's project was to create a storage are for my rolling stock. It's adjacent to a small 0-5-0 fiddle yard for my point to point based on Brunswick, GA area.
I decided not to use cork roadbed since it's role is storage, not operation. I'll simply move cars from here onto and off of the fiddle yard. The main consideration was making sure I could see the car numbers and pick up the cars without knocking over any others, hence a 2" track spacing.
Pink foam cleverly disguised with tan paint. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Cars in place, plenty of room for more. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Fiddle yard. Scratch built Hercules plant will go inside this space

Now if my new power supply for my DCC setup will just arrive...

I painted my sky this weekend. It took two tries to get a result i can live with but since its only 10' long, its not too hard to try again.

I’m having trouble getting the right size capillary tubing to serve as drive shafts for my 0-10-0 project. I was shorted on one order, and I also did forget to order one size.
Still working on the tender and noodling some ideas for the boiler shell. In the meantime, I am going through my vehicle collection, putting some up on eBay and detailing others.
Hey, somebody has to hold up the “hack” end of the WUD spectrum!

Great stuff so far! Karl, that MOW shell is incredible!
Here's a (short) video of my just-completed sound decoder install in a (re-motored) N scale LL SW1200....
This was inspired by the work of, and following forum discussion started by, Jim Starbuck...

Wow Russ that is just downright fantastic!
You have something extremely special there. Superb work!
I’m digging the cool lighting as well.
