Looks like Kato is going to do the Supercontinental using Milwaukee cars and UP smooth side prototypes. Also an ABA set of F7s.  Discuss.

Out of my timeframe, but CN did buy a large number of cars from US roads in the 1960s and 70s as passenger service was cut back and eventually Amtrak came into being.  Mid 1960s- Milwaukee indeed did sell the obs cars and six of its big dome cars to CN. It looks like there are two 10-6 cars in the set that could be from the Broadway set, and my recollection is that CN also ended up with a number of plan 4140 cars from NYC.  The train seems plausible.  GTW (at least, not sure about CN proper) bought some 44 seat coaches from UP in the 1960s- that either went to the CN parent or to commuter operations in Detroit with the coming of Amtrak.  The baggage car, AFAIK, is a foobie for CN, but as I say, out of my timeframe, and the Rapido baggage car (which is correct for CN) would be a ready substitute. That serves me right- got out the bifocals to take a closer look at that last link from the OP- and Kato shows the cars with CN numbers and notes on the original roads....

Kudos to Kato for recognizing the opportunity to provide modelers with a full 70s era train using parts from several of their 50s streamliners.

I may have been right in the first place- the rosters I could find show coach 5712 as a CCF Day-nighter (not ex-UP) and baggage 9150 as an NSC baggage (similar to the Rapido car).  And while the diner is not too far off the CN design, I can't find any "ex-UP" diner with that number.

That's really cool! Nice way to get some extra milage out of that tooling!

I'm still hoping for Kato to do a proper 1955 Empire Builder but this is definitely tempting... Would look good with Rapido's Canadian!

Interesting that they are calling it a "Transcontinental" train.  I like that they are not trying to pass it off as a true Supercontinental.

Perhaps it's a trademark issue...  Or at the very least showing professional courtesy to a certain Canadian manufacturer... :D

I don't need one, but it certainly is cool! What years did this train run?

Yeah.. I was just gonna ask.. if there are no steam generators....

I see some photos with power cars behind the locos, but I assume the photos without power cars have steam generator F7s... right?

Like so..

OR.. maybe.. MAYBE.. they assume us rivet counters will use FP-9s, and Kato is doing freight F7s to expand the market..
And those who don't care.... won't care..

Rapido is doing the passenger FP9A and F9B's for this train, so you can just buy the seven car set... unless of course you want the freight units for other purposes. Or run the F&'s on this without a steam generator car and trigger people.

CN bought 4-4-2, 10-roomette and 22-roomette sleepers, that had been used on the 20th Century Limited, from the NYC.
Assuming that Kato will produce those body styles, in the future they could offer some add-on cars for this CN set.

I think the Rapido will be the way to go, since the steam generators are at the opposite end from conventional F units.  Always wondered what they pulled out to enable them to put 2 SG's in there.  Also wondering why EMD did not arrange its B units that way from the start- since the B has minimal controls (if any) the space that would be occupied by the cab in an A seems like a more logical than shoehorning one into the area behind the fans.
