Didn’t like the look of the cast resin bed that came with the kit, so I decided to bite the bullet and just build a new one from scratch.

Up until this point I’ve never really built anything from scratch before.

Built the gate today. Hinging the gate and building the latches will come later.
Used some scale hardware on the “coal chute” for attaching the handle to the door and the fulcrum point.

Oh, and did I mention that I made it so the chute works?

Well that's running on the assumption that some people aren't combing over others blogs in their spare time.

Here’s a closeup photo of the scale hardware on the chute assembly that DKS took.

Is the grain deliberate, or just a happy accident?

Hung the gate today after cutting a mountain of firewood.

And a nice closeup of the nut and washer on the bolt that forms one of the hinges.

Dump bed is now hinged onto the frame. All that’s left to do on the bed is to build latches of some kind to keep the gate closed when I want.

Looks great Cody.  Now you just need to come up with a power takeoff and a hydraulic lift.  :)

There's a prototype for everything.
If you can't make it perfect, make it adjustable.

Cosmetic hydraulics are next. As are latches for the rear gate.
There are plans to animate the bed as well. I debated using actual scale hydraulics, but that probably would not be feasible. The plan is something mechanical mounted under the layout.

A simple servo driving some fine music wire up & down through a tube should work fine if dump takes place at a single location.

Too fast. Plan is for a nice slow gearhead motor with an eccentric crank to do the lifting. Not sure what I’m going to use for the rod just yet since the plan is to be able to dump a load of gravel with it.
