I had a go at making my river features with caulking. I’m pleased with the result. Once dry I can paint it and then begin applying gloss and gel mediums.

Where can I find period aerial photography?

Craig.

As indicated already. Very helpful, especially for areas inaccessible to photography such as lumber mills.

Good call Tim!  I’ll have to start scouting locations.

More progress on the river. I painted the rest of the river bed and put on two heavy coats of Modpodge Super gloss.

Once it had tacked up and wasn’t fluid anymore I stippled texture into it.

And once that was stiff enough I stippled on super thick gel medium to add more dimension to some of the bigger rapids.

That’s where is now. All of the medium has dried and has a nice texture. The next step is to dry brush white to create the look of white water.

I was not please with how the river was looking.  The waves were too uniform and the colour wound up looking minty after I dry brushed the white,  So I removed it and started over.

Thanks to @Scottl  for assisting me with achieving more realistic detail and colouring. Scott REALLY knows his rivers.  It's not done but I'm far more pleased with the direction its going now. This time I opted for a detailed river bottom that would have a tinted clear epoxy pour as they base for the water.

The river was easy to remove.  I reshaped it to be more of a bowl shape vs the flat bottom with a trough that it was originally.

I sanded the bottom and spread out boulders that would be approximately 6" to about 18" in size.  I made the coverage less dense in the middle.  I also added some smaller stones at the rivers edge, and some random large boulders throughout the river.

For the colour, Scott suggested I add a small amount of red to the Beach Glass that I was using and boy did that do the trick.  The colour became a pefect grey/green.  I used this mixture to paint the bed and most of the rocks.  I then dry brushed some of the bed with dark grey and highlighted the boulders with the same.

I wasn't sure how much of the paint to add to the Envirotex resin so I experimented mixing it with water and filling the bed.  I tried a few times.  It takes two cups of water to fill the bed to the right level and in that about 25 drops of paint makes a mixture that looks sufficiently silty to me.  In this experiment I used light grey paint.  When I pour I'll use the new mixture of green/grey.  The river is sloped so it's too deep at one end in the picture but when shimmed the depth is just right, with the impression of the shore line fading into the deeper river. I also learned that the bed leaks a little so I've since covered the bottom with a layer of full strength Modpodge to seal it.

I'm much happier with the direction this is going.  The next step is to take the leap and pour the resin.

I’ve been working steadily on my river.

After completing the bed I poured the resin. Before pouring I mixed a bit of paint into it to tint it. Once it had started to cure I pushed little divots down stream of the boulders that were just below the surface.

Following that I added a layer of gloss Modpodge and blew ripples into it with a straw.

I messed around with a pile of different techniques now in an attempt to learn how to make white water. Thanks again to @Scottl for emailing back and forth with me constantly. His knowledge of rivers is immense and he helped me evaluate the result of all if the techniques I tried. There’s no way I could have pulled this off without his guidance. What I settled in was next adding a layer of thick acrylic gloss medium and blowing that around to make larger wave forms.

Once that was dry I created wave crests with clear acrylic caulk. I used very little. Just enough to selectively make the rounder waves into sharper rapids. Finally to that i dressed the crests is the waves in the rapids with a Snow Product I found by Decoart called Snow Tex. It’s a bright white paint that has granular bits in it. It dries hard as rock. I used this product to try to create a three dimensional boiling rapid kind of look in select spots.

Once that was complete I did a little bit of white dry brushing to blend these rapids in with the surrounding water. I also mixed a wash of the original bed paint but slightly lighter to give the impression of aerated water in the rapids. Finally I added a last coat of the thinner gloss Modpodge and blew that around to further bring all of the details together and also recreate the smaller waves that were lost when I added the thicker gel.

I’ve also run my bus wiring, installed feeders, and done the final installation of the bridge and track. So as it sits right now it’s ready to operate.

The next step is to add ballast, ground cover and trees.

HA! Thank you. But considering the company I’m in I’ll just keep practicing.
