I also had a little fun with some 100 strand 14awg speaker wire. I can’t see any deciduous trees in the photos of this area but I could use them in another project. These trees would be 20-40ft tall. The wire is so fine I don’t know how I would actually add the canopy but it was fun to mess around.

This week I made some progress on the trees:

And I got some various colours of static grass and ground up leaves in for texture where the trees will go. I also blended more of the gravel and earth areas with some light grey grout.

Next up is to finish the trees, and then final weathering on the bridge abutments and road bed. It’s getting close to completion.

I wired the module.

And finally got around to weathering the track and abutments.

I also added a little bit of shrubbery. I’ll finish that up once I add trees.

That’s pretty much as far as I plan to go with scenery. I plan to add some wildflowers and of course trees, but those will have to wait until I can get a grass machine.

Time to work on some legs.

Craig.

Looking good!  Definitely the way to learn how to do scenery; will have to try something similar when the time comes.

Thanks Tim.

Today I put all of the tree armatures in place (edit: to locate areas where less scrub should be - and then removed them ) and then added scrub.

I was absolutely terrified of scenery. Several times I’ve started modules and got to the plaster and foam stage but never moved past that. People encouraged me and when they say that scenery is very forgiving I would tend to agree. I’m no where near the level that many of the other pros are here but then my first loco paint job wasn’t so hot either.

My only regret is that I’ve only been building models the last 20 years. I should have done this sooner.

I really encourage you to just jump in and go for it.

I’m very slow. I started building the bridge in November and was hoping to have it all complete for a local RPM meet next weekend. I’ll be close. Everything but the trees will be done.

Craig.

First time looking at this. Outstanding. The methodical progression is nearly a primer on how do do just about everything.  I'm like you, hesitant to try scenery, but this definitely encourages me to try.

Thank you. I’m very pleased with the results. I wouldn’t have been able to do it with out the help from this group. Especially @CNR5529 and @Scottl. And of course thanks to @BCR 570 for the photos.

It’s as ready as it’s going to get for the RPM meet this weekend. I wish I could have had the trees done but that’s ok. I’ve put the armatures back in place, and I also added some signs.

And of course the obligatory comparison with the prototype.

Thanks again for all if the help and encouragement.

Suggest you break up that straight line of 4 evenly spaced trees and corresponding bushes all in a straight line along the front edge of the module... unless of course you’re modeling a replanted commercial tree plantation. It’s tough to model the randomness of nature when we have straight layout or module edges to deal with.

This is a great looking module, nice to see another BC Rail modeller here. I look forward to seeing this with more trees.

It definitely needs a good photo backdrop, even if it's just a temporary one.

Agreed. As this is my only module at this time it will inevitably be used for photographing models. I need a mountain-scape to put behind it.

Really nice job, Craig, and I agree - I was scared of really starting scenery, but the materials are so good and there are so many helpful videos that it is not bad at all.  Perhaps the hardest part for me was just accumulating all of the stuff (scenery materials, tools) to that when I set out to do something, I can actually make progress without having to stop due to the absence of a key tool, part or scenery material.  Your module is looking great!
