Al, your post used to contain a more detailed explanation of what microcontroller you used, and a schematic diagram. Not that info is gone! What happened?

Thanks Al - that is very handy info. And you are  not hijacking the thread. This thread is about applications for small stepper motors after all, and you provided a perfect example.
