My two plywood work cabooses are now weathered and sealed:



The end ladder assemblies have been left off to leave the roofs removable for installation of decoders and lighting.

Nothing horribly exciting this week. Installed a squawk box at Cajon station, one of the last “offices of communication”
on Cajon Pass, and the last major unscenicked area on my layout. We can now talk to the dispatcher.
Also finished Cajon station wiring; Time to get Route 66 going and the adjacent scenery.

It was network week at the GC&W. Outlined in last week's "21st-Century Layout Control" thread was upgrading the JMRI control network to handle multiple wireless control panels without overwhelming the WiFi. The plan at the moment is wireless panels resembling traditional MRR control panels for things like yards and junctions, like this one on a really cheap 7" Android tablet:



Since all turnouts on the layout are DCC-controlled, this works pretty well, just tap the icon to throw the switch.

The upgrade was replacing a home-style WiFi router with a business-grade access point and 1GB router; a recurring discussion in the JMRI world is low-end WiFi routers can't handle more than a handful of smartphone-throttles or panels like this. The ethernet side of layout control is now all 1GB connections, and the improvement in performance is palpable. Who knew? An unexpected benefit of the pro router was port forwarding to connect the layout to the outside world for offsite remote dispatching, tested successfully last night.

Nice!  How did you make the sides?

This started out as an old Rowa car. The windows were filled in with styrene, new windows cut out, and then plenty of putty and sanding to smooth out the sides.

I changed it to an attachment and I'll remember that for the future.

Oh, I know the issues... fixing the handrails and walkways are a PITA. I hosed myself gluing everything together before painting and now have a dilemma on my hands since the handrails have to be masked. It would've been a lot less daunting had I not "finished" it prematurely:



The handrails are spliced now, but it's been in the unpainted state for seven years.
