I've tried black (flat, semi-glossy and glossy), different greens and different browns, but the best color I found for my portable layout is a warm, medium gray semi-gloss color I got at Walmart called "Taupestone" #96092.

I hang a hunter green curtain under it at shows and at home when I'm not working on it, and I like the two colors together, the darker green making the layout appear to "float" above the curtain.

Photo (1) - "Taupestone" #96092 (WalMart ColorPlace Interior Semi-gloss) and hunter green curtain at Evanston Roundhouse Festival several years ago on my sectional/portable layout:

Although many people like black for both light valances and layout fascias, because it is the best at isolating the track and scenery...the contrast is too much for me.  Brighter greens and browns I think also detract from the layout's natural colors.

If you'd like a slightly darker color than the "Taupe" color...UP Harbor Mist Grey (the Scalecoat II version) is a very nice warm grey.  Lighter and cooler versions I would not be a fan of for layout fascia color.

Interestingly, Dave Vollmer's fascia color on his HO scale RGS looks to be a lot like the "Taupestone" color I decided on.  My philosophy is that the fascia color and texture should be as unnoticeable as possible and not contrast sharply with the layout's colors nor be a match for them either. It should be a "neutral" color and shade which recedes from the eye's attention.

The ultimate compliment IMO for a layout's fascia should be "Did you like the color of that layout's fascia?"..."Hmmm...I don't remember much about it."

Should add that I'd prefer flat paint, but it shows finger prints like crazy. So been forced to go semi gloss as well.

I think I went with eggshell on the Seaboard Central 2.0.  Happy medium between low sheen and durability.

Man.  Just like the last election, I don't have anything to vote for!

I prefer my bars dark, but my layout fascias lighter :P

Of course it depends on the setting; my layout has two peninsulas with small portions of the fascia visible across the  room so I needed something to blend in with the scenery.

And who says it needs to be paint? I’m using self stick vinyl wallpaper with a bit of texture. It’s cheap, cuts and trims easily,  and can be washed with a moist sponge. And I add a wood grained shelf in a few places to add a bit of class and a place for glasses and such.

I like the black fascia but if it's 16" high it might be too intense .
I voted for brown , but I think it all depends of the height .
Thanks ,
Louis

My goal exactly!  And the color I used was Sherwin-Williams Porpoise (because the basement walls were painted S-W Worldly Gray) but because I prefer Behr Premium Plus, I had Home Depot mix me up that color in Behr.

Conrail?  LOL...

Oh god no!

Real Conrail blue looks terrible on pretty much anything that's not a locomotive or caboose.

I love the way that black forces the eye to focus on the modeling, but I do agree that it is quite stark in contrast, except when the layout is so well lit, like Chris' layout.  I have always been partial to military greens, such as a dark olive or dark olive drab in a high wear satin.
