Trying out new fascia colors

I have been looking at other layouts and been considering a change to my fascia.

It has been a tan since the very beginning

Some layouts look great with a black fascia…

But I am not sure about black, maybe a dark brown

I would go with a beige just a bit darker than the overall scenery color impression. Perhaps in the same vein as your tan but a little darker.

I use hunter green.

Man.  Just like the last election, I don't have anything to vote for!

Mine is Southern Pacific Dark Lark. Goes with my SP modeling. I find black too drastic.

Yeah, those Black Widows are way too drastic.

The brown is neutral but less stark than the black.  The tan OTOH is actually too light.

If I had to vote, I'd choose "brown".  But a dark "grayish" brown.  That's what I went with.  Dark earth tones, I think, seem to cause the layout edge to disappear so the layout appears to be just floating.  And they don't call attention to themselves as a "border" like black does.

I would say the same thing for Lee's idea of the hunter green - I think it works well because it carries layout terrain colors "off the edge into space".

You can go to an old thread "the Indiana Harbor Belt of Texas" but on my last layout, I used IHB Black, with an orange stripe.  I liked it, and see no problem with using your railroad colors.  I have seen Chessie and other colors on other home layouts.  If not, use the flat black to highlight the layout itself.  My third preference would be the tan, because your scenery might change base colors along the way.  But, I like high contrast, others may not.

Just don't leave it bare wood!

I'm gonna say that between my Juniata Division and the Colorado Midland, black looks good on a small layout.  For a room-filler, though, I still think it may be a bit much.

...  I ... see no problem with using your railroad colors. ...

I already established a Harbor Mist gray theme in the layout room, and that might go on the fascia. OTOH, no wood or wood composites on the layout, I'm using black hair-cell ABS sheet for the fascia. It would be a lot less work to just leave it black.  :shoulder-shrug:

Black works, but you can see every scratch and scrape. Other dark colors like dark green or dark brown don’t seem to be as sensitive as black. But black is the traditional blackout color.

If the layout was set in the Pacific Northwest or the Appalachians,  I would agree with you on Hunter Green, but I model Southern California,  and that is why I went tan to begin with...
