Trying out new fascia colors

You can go to an old thread "the Indiana Harbor Belt of Texas" but on my last layout, I used IHB Black, with an orange stripe.  I liked it, and see no problem with using your railroad colors.  I have seen Chessie and other colors on other home layouts.  If not, use the flat black to highlight the layout itself.  My third preference would be the tan, because your scenery might change base colors along the way.  But, I like high contrast, others may not.

Just don't leave it bare wood!

If the layout was set in the Pacific Northwest or the Appalachians,  I would agree with you on Hunter Green, but I model Southern California,  and that is why I went tan to begin with...

That’s why I think your on the right track with the tan but imho it needs toning down a shade or three.

My choices are brown and woodgrain. IMO, the latter adds a little extra class.



The black stripe, BTW, is Velcro, so I can hang the throttle anywhere on the layout.

Well my choice has always been flat black or lately a deep flat grey like Monument. I first chose black after visiting the Australian War Memorial in Canberra where all of the dioramas featuring battle scenes from world war one and two had black as the fascia and valances. The lighting was all concealed which made your eyes go directly to the scene and not be distracted by the outside surrounds.
Since then my colour of choice has been flat black for my fascia and valance until my new HOn3 layout got a coat of almost the Monument colour.
Our Thompson River Canyon N Scale display layout had all black including the curtain below the fascia so the scenery popped.

Black is used in theater stage productions when they want to hide something in plain sight.

Black does look dramatic, however my fascia is brown. Logic being that it is a slice through the earth, therefore it should be an earth color.

I see many great idea's on color here and some trying to match different scenic tones.  I like the idea of black but yes, it shows the slightest mark on it.  I pondered this for quite awhile and finally decided on a satin medium gray.  I bought a gallon of Sherwin Williams #6235 "Grays Harbor" in Satin.  I two coated it several years ago and it looks great today.  When you walk into the layout room your eye goes to the layout and scenery and not the fascia.  Because it is a complete neutral color a person does not go to it with the eye.  It just disappears even though it is right in front of you.  It takes away the problem of trying to match colors.    Doug

I'm with Rod. I use semi gloss "Monument" colour. It is not a solid black, but not far off.

Should add that I'd prefer flat paint, but it shows finger prints like crazy. So been forced to go semi gloss as well.

Always thought black was too abrupt... "The world ends here" kind of thing.
