Yep. This is getting to the "I... can't... resist... take... the... mouse... away... before... somebody... gets.... hurt" point. Very tempting. But my particular problem is I don't need another hobby. I mean, you guys are doing great things with these machines and I fully acknowledge I am a beneficiary of everybody's efforts here, but from my perch I see this being a consumptive distraction when I'm having enough trouble focusing on getting the layout in some manner of orderly state in 11 months' time, much less finishing things.

WHAT DID I JUST DO??!?

 :D

It broke me. $239 on eBay, free shipping: https://www.ebay.com/itm/ANYCUBIC-Photon-3D-Printer-SLA-Light-Cure-FEP-Frame-2-8-TFT-Screen-405nm-Resin/293187694325?hash=item4443592ef5

I came to the realization that there are bunches of little details I want to experiment with that I sorta kinda don't want to bother others with. For example, modeling the backs of signal heads, or various experiments in making to-scale 3-color vertical signals, missing details that are in the way of completing loco projects, small structures for the layout such as interlocking towers, lampposts for the Kelso depot... the list goes on and on. And on. IOW, things I need that might just speed up layout execution.

Now that I've taken the plunge, the realization is, "Is this a razor intended to sell blades?", the Gillette business model. Or Kodak's ploy, "Is this a cheap camera and the real profit is in film?" Buy the (now cheap) printer, spend your weekly allowance on resin. Yeah, that's the ticket.  ;)  I guess the same could be said for 99% iso.

Now I need to clear a spot on the workbench.

I didn't even look to see who the seller was on that eBay listing before pressing "Buy"... it's AnyCubic (anycubic-official). Sounds to me like they're blowing out stock of the original model. Can't be for the Photon S, that was barely an incremental difference, so all I can figure is a model with higher X/Y resolution is around the corner.

Doesn't bother me. It probably bothers Shapeways. Again, I used to run hi-res 2D service companies, a business model that basically vanished when 600+ dpi laser printers crossed the $1000 threshold. The only thing I can think of that will save their business is brokering STL files. I doubt their specialty trade in odd materials such as metals can alone justify the overhead of keeping the lights on.

CONGRATS!  This will be the best-worst decision of your life or maybe the worst-best decision.

For example, modeling the backs of signal heads, or various experiments in making to-scale 3-color vertical signals

That one is still on my experimental/to-do list.  I've been meaning to make it a priority, especially after the sample LEDs you sent!

Could be, we'll find out when it shows up; I'm in no hurry, have a lot going on right now. But in truth I'd rather it be that way so I have a choice of color rather than the luck of the draw. For most of my work I will want white, and eventually black, rather than gray (or transparent green, or... whatever).

OTOH... this is interesting - John's link to the Amazon deal is now at $299.

When I got mine it was like $415 and at the they were $525 on Amazon.

Now I saw a few crazy cheap on ebay. There were a buch that got shipped with dental resin $$$ and I wonder if these on ebay are those, but with the resin removed.

Either way I think the vat alone is $70-80. New screen is like $150.

You got a deal!
