Deluxe Twinstack: Which FVM Wheels?
« on: August 17, 2019, 11:57:54 PM »

I have a Deluxe Innovations Twinstack that I would like to convert the trucks at the articulation points to FVM wheels but an unsure which ones. The trucks appear to be Atlas trucks but I see FVM has .553, .563 and .576 wheels for Atlas trucks. Some FVM packaging appears to say "older Atlas" or "modern Atlas" but don't know where these cars fell on that spectrum.

Incidentally, I want to keep the Atlas trucks at the articulations for their centered bolsters vs. offset as with the MT trucks....plus the bolster pins really don't come out of these cars easily at all.

Thanks!

They're the Atlas-sized .553 wheels. Both the Atlas metal wheels (original style) and FVM's .553s fit the Deluxe TwinStacks.

I think these were released with different trucks in different production runs (although I acquired all mine second hand so possibly other owners changed them).   But some did have Atlas trucks.  If they came with accumates then they are Atlas trucks and Metro has it correct. Prototype has 36 inch wheels at the articulated trucks and 33 inch wheels on the ends.

Some runs do have the appearance of coming with MTL, having a magne-matic sticker on the box (I have a pair of red SP units so marked, and equipped). In any event, as jagged ben states, ends are 33" and the rest are 36".

Thanks for the info, guys! I'll give the .553's a go.

Good luck trying to buy any FVM wheelsets for now. Unless someone can enlighten me. I need a bunch of various metal wheelsets.

Yes, there's a Fox Valley Wheelset drought, but I believe you can still buy .553" axles if you look hard enough; it's the .540" MTL-compatible axles that are nowhere to be found.

As of last Monday - a week ago - Papa Ben’s in Houston had twelve packs of Rapido 36” wheelsets. I believe those are .540” axle length; I used some in MTL trucks. They don’t have any profile on the rear of the wheel but otherwise appear to be decent wheelsets.
