SDP40F off of thingiverse

I haven't really look at thingiverse in a couple of years and last night looking for something else, I found a N scale SDP40F. I will let you all know now that I'm really dumb when it comes to them there diesels that are later than the late '50's. At first glance, it looks too long to print, but I loaded into photon slicer anyways, played around with it in different positions, and it would barely fit if I stood it on the rear and tilted it to add the support.

Screen shot of it in slicer

Printed at 50 microns and 21 hours later, this is what I have. Have no idea what I'm going to do with it, but I do have a IM SD40 tunnel motor chassis I can modify to make the shell fit.

Is this shell in some way different or better than the Kato SDP40F, or do you just want to make a shell to put on that IM SD40 tunnel motor chassis?

Very crude rendering (unfortunately).

Kato has yet to the more common flat nose version.

Yeah, it is fairly crude rendering, and the surface detail seems exaggerated. But I'm sure it was a good feeling to be able to just whip one of those shells out at home.   3D printers used to be called Santa Claus Machines for a good reason.  :)

Flat nose?

Flat nose?

Yeah.  :D

"The first batch (500-539) arrive in the summer of 1973 and included a pointed nose. The rest of SDP40F production (540-649) delivered during 1974 included the nose with a flat section in the center around the access door. "

Probably a dumb question, but can you apply the nose from your 3D printed piece to a Kato SDP40F shell and get the best of both worlds?

It was more of experiment to see how well the printer would print a shell on end.

 Didn't even notice that.

I model the mid '50's so I really don't care what nose in on it. But to answer your question, yes, I'm sure that could be done.

I just have not had the time to do anything with them. Maybe we need to pony up and pay someone within the community to get the boiler and cylinders drawn up. Need to find some readily available 60" or 61" spoked drivers (a little smaller than the 63" prototype cause of the flanges) and I can get started on the frames.

Me just rambling to myself about spincasting the frames,
I really need to get some zinc alloy to cast them though, cause the price of the Britt metal I'm using now is just under $20 a pound and I try to buy 100 pounds at a time for a bigger price break. I've found some zinc alloy for around $5 a pound that I want to try. One problem I might have with the zinc is the higher melting temp and the organic molds I use might not handle that higher temps. The silicone mold blanks cost about $40 verses the organic at $15 and will probably use them. I won't be doing any casting till it cools off a little though.

Not even close to it.  Had the vat as full as I could get it when I started it and didn't use but maybe a third of it.

Kato has yet to the more common flat nose version.

Talking to the Kato rep at NTS, the flat nose version is one they want to do. Along with the ATSF version before the nose corners were clipped

That was also mentioned. But for the flat nose, it should just be tooling up the nose.  But they seemed to appreciate that I understood that the US market makes up a very small percentage of total Kato sales
