The Wonderful GG-1: it lasted a long time...

Indeed (according to Wikipedia) from 1934 to 1983: 49 years; however...

Since I have an interest in European trains  (as I'm sure a lot of us do) I picked up this HO scale Liliput "SBB-CFF-FFS Ae 4/7":

It runs great and is very nicely detailed. The prototype was first built in 1925, with the main class being made between 1927 and 1934. The last one was retired in 1996; a total of 69(!) years!   :o

Who'd a thunk?

Have a good weekend, all!   :)

It should probably go in the HO forum.   ;)

I have gotten to be fascinated by box cabs and European electrics lately, too. I posted pictures of GG1's and a couple Euro electrics in the Arnold Rapido thread.

I suppose; only because I first learned about this particular engine after purchasing an HO model.

But the point I was making was about the longevity of (2) "real" locos, so I put it in the Prototype section...plus, I figured if I put it here (in HO) nobody would read it!  :)

I also collect European prototype trains, and own several German and Swiss Electric locos.  Like this Brawa E77 articulated loco (N scale).

Back in 2013 I posted about its decoder install in https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=31615.msg351219#msg351219

I don't run it often, but it does run well.

OK, I'm going to post this again, here, because it's such a beautiful, unique, locomotive. It's the Arnold model of a Swiss electric. This one's green and there is another slightly different version in brown. If I ever see it reasonably priced, it will also be mine :D In spite of the rather complex running gear, it runs very smoothly:

I mistakenly made it sound like the "Arnold Rapido" thread is in this forum but it's at the Trainboard.

Isn't that the "Krocodile"?   :)

I often see those come up on eBay, although I don't know what a "reasonably priced" model might go for.

Should you score one, please let us know all about it...and what you think of it.

Edit: So far we have (1) picture of an HO scale model and (2) responses with N scale models...which is why I wasn't sure where this topic should go...  :?

LOL!  Well, you started with mentioning prototype's longevity, then showed H0 model. Then Doug mentioned general fascination with the older boxcab electrics, and I posted a photo of ne of my N scale models.

Yes Doug's models of the SwissCrocodile. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile_%28locomotive%29
Aronld model is a Be 6/8 while Minitrix produced a model of Ce 6/8.
Recently, Jagerndorfer  produced N scale model of an Austrian Crockodile 1089 (in several variants).

I own all 3 models. There are also models of German "Alligator" (class E93) and a shorter, non-articulated class 144 loco. I also own those models.

There is quite a variety of this type of European locomotive models available in H0., and N.

It seems to me that this thread really belongs the Crew Lounge (since it is not scale specific).  Or maybe back in the Prototype section since it is about boxcab electrics in general.  Not an easy choice.

That's certainly impressive, but CN's boxcab electrics - originally built for CN predecessor Canadian Northern in 1917 - ran through the Mount Royal tunnel in Montreal for more than 76 years: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CN_Boxcab_Electric
