Problem with ESU Nano Pilot STD
« on: May 09, 2019, 07:36:16 PM »

I have two Pilots, 1 in each B unit that follows an F-3  B unit with has and LokSound Micro select. I used the Nano Pilots because you can set up a start delay time to match the Selects. I went to do an change of de acceleration on one of the Pilots. The LokSound programmer says it does not support the decoder found. I don't see where there might be an update of software.
Any ideas? Right now I can't change any thing< not even the address?    :?

Did you test the decoder before trying to program? Or just installed and went right to programming?  If the LokProgrammer is not seeing the decoder then that sounds like a bad decoder.  Both decoders are behaving the same?  Have you tried another decoder (to see if the LokProgrammer still works)?

Still a good idea even now to see if it will work at the standard address 3.  Or power the loco with a 9V battery to see if it works on DC (assuming that analog operation is enabled by default).

Locomotive runs fine, all sounds work and lights,  have not put the other B unit on the track yet.
You may recall that I had a problem with and 73800 Micro select that had a bad audio amp earlier in and A unit. These are the B's that trail it.
I was trying to set the de-acceleration when I found the programmer telling me it did not support the decoder.
These things make me pull my hair- and it all gone!

No need to pull any more of your leftover hair. There are many ways to skin a decoder.  :D  You need to take your focus off the LokProgrammer (it is lien an addiction).  :)
So you need to program the momentum CVs (CV2 and CV3), right?  Not need for your fancy ESU programmer - you can set those on any DCC system (either on the programming track, or even POM (program on main).  Same with setting the address. I know, that won't solve the problem, but it will at least keep you going while you research the problem and solution (maybe contact ESU).

Exlactly what I did. Unplugged the ESU programmer and used my Power Cab to adjust CV-4.
It just is very frustrating that the ESU programmer is not working like it should ?
A call to ESU this Am. Hope they are at home.

Well the phone call to ESU produced zero-zip-? No service, has they only have a service tech there on Tuesday and Thursday- what the h### is with that? Has happened to me before- NO SERVICE.
I use 150 decoders per year-maybe more. It is no wonder I prefer SoundTraxx!
The decoder or programmer does not know the day to misbehave, guess there should be a CV to set, to cure that.
Right now I am really disappointed to say the least!  :RUEffinKiddingMe:

Is this the first Nano you've tried to use the programmer with or have others worked fine with it before?

Wow, I can't believe that with the popularity of ESU decoders that they only have a tech that's available Tuesdays and Thurdays only!   :o

That is sort of a yes, no to your question. I had used the programmer to set these up a month or so back.
But yes these are a decoder I have not used before.
I originally set these up to run with a micro select Sound decoder (73800) installed into an A unit (Kato F-3)
There was a glitch in the Pilots soft ware and was corrected va an update. The delay on start up was not working correctly. The update cured that.
I don’t know if the update for the programmer has changed since the new 5 series decoder has come out.
I am about to dump all of the down loads that I have stored for ESU and start from scratch .
Seems like I spend as much time on programming has it takes to do an install.
This is to Russ’ question

While I understand how frustrating this is, I think it has to be be put in perspective.  This is not a large computer company (like the one I work for - nights and weekends) with a 7x24 tech support that supports customers who need to be up 100% and spend millions of dollars on service contracts.  Companies which, if their computers are down, will be losing millions of dollars/hr in revenue.

It is a rather small electronic manufacturer of hobby products in Germany, with even a smaller branch office in U.S.    They have no budget (or even a need) to staff their tech support 7x24 (or even 9-5 Monday-Friday).  How much market penetration you think ESU has in U.S. compared to our domestic DCC manufacturers?  ESU USA's staffing is probably optimal, just as it is.

Sorry to be blunt, but that is how I see it.

Well I can understand no 7-24, but only two days a week?
I have E-Mailed Matt many times in the past only to be told he was swamped- with tech questions.
So I think that there is a need for support.
How can you expect to grow if there is no support.
And yes, I have no idea has to what Matt has to do to keep support help.
I also realize that has an installer,  when I need help it is because I am trying to fulfill my customers needs.
With this problem, I will be 5 days in the rears trying to solve.
I called on a Friday AM, so I loose 5 days with a problem that should only take 30 minutes tops. ( I hope)

Jerry,

I just tried reading / updating a Nano Std with LP V5.0.5, and didn't have any issues.  Do you have any keep alive capacitors attached, which might affect the LP's ability to read the decoder info?

No keep alives in these or the A unit.
The only thing I am unsure of is what version my programmer is running.
I did the up grade, but I must have gotten 10 pop ups has to do you really want to do this or that I was bewildered.
I can solder a 402 surface mount LED or resistor but following a pop up list on the computer is not my best suit.

You might want to try uninstalling LP, then reinstalling v4.7.2.  Then, and only then, install 5.0.5, and don't overwrite 4.7.2.  This will install both versions on your PC (they coexist just nicely).  The LokProgrammer hardware has nothing that can be updated on it, so the version of the software doesn't matter.

That's what I thought too, but someone somewhere (maybe on the Yahoo loksound forum?) said that the hardware gets updated too. Call me confused . . .
