Couple of Great LokSound Select Files

Had to mention a couple relatively new Loksound Select (and V4) sound files I've recently tried that are simply outstanding, IMHO. These were both posted without any samples (seems to be the new norm) so you may not have heard them yet. The first is the 75(4,8,3)26 (GE 16cyl FDL Dash 7 V2[FT]) file which I believe is their best GE dash-7 series sound file yet by far. It really captures that trademark GE chug with very clear and robust sound. The second I think is even better yet and it's the 73(4,8,3)50 (EMD 16cyl 645F3B [FT]) file. While this file is intended for GP and SD50's, I installed it in a GP60 as it sounds spot-on for those too...at least to my ear. The quality of sound from this file seems like it's on a whole other level and there's a bunch of air dryer and spitter sounds that, to me, sound way closer to what you really hear in the wild. This is also the first file I've heard from ESU that has the dryer/spitter sounds already programmed to start on F8. Also included is a warm-up/high idle after startup, similar to the 73(4,8,3)31 file. I know we're at the end of the Selects and V4 era but, if these files are an indicator of the quality we'll be getting with the new V5 library, we should be in for a treat! :D

...noticing that the higher pitched sounds at low idle are a bit piercing after a while with the GP/SD50 file. I might need to play around with volumes and sound speeds to try to take the edge off a little.

Is ESU going to continue to add the sound files to V4 and Select libraries going forward, so that we can continue to update our older decoders with new and improved sounds?

Yes I know, but (to me) this sounds as much like their 710 files as their 710 files. Even more so than one of them...particularly while idling...and I find the overall quality is a little better than the other one.

I've moved away installing sound files based solely on their listed source recording and am going with final results, although I admit there's still a part of me that this kind of bothers. I'm now going for overall quality and what sounds like a close match. I am pretty particular about this stuff but I will admit I would probably struggle to always tell how many cylinders are banging away in a prime mover, for example, which I think gets mostly lost in the end anyway. It's the more overtly-characteristic stuff that stands out to me, like how a turbo kind of chirps at idle (like with this GP/SD50 file and proto GP60's) or maybe how a file sounds at the faster speed settings (there's a few files I've tried that I find sort of turn into a noisy mess at the higher speed settings).

There's also something else that I don't like and will have a bearing on what file I use and that's being able to pick up on sound looping, especially at idle. I may have a particularly sensitive ear for this but it can start to drive me nuts after a while as it starts to become rhythmic or even musical. ;)

Is ESU going to continue to add the sound files to V4 and Select libraries going forward, so that we can continue to update our older decoders with new and improved sounds?

I sure hope so. I would love a higher quality modern GE file!
