Maybe it's time to invest in glass display cases.
I like the ability to freely fondle the model (to look at it from multiple angles, including the bottom). If it sits in a display I lose that ability. Even if the model could be removed to be examined, I would have to hunt down the very busy sales rep, and ask them to take it out of the case. But unfortunately, it looks like we are heading in that direction. That is really too bad. This world is getting nastier and nastier every year.

The "bad actors" are likely citizens born here to American parents.
But AMT is a Canadian/Canadien roadname, n'est-ce pas?
It could also just be a kid too. When I was displaying for the N Scale Vehicle Association, kids would just come up and grab things. It's a delicate balance to discourage this behavior but also not come off as a jerk. I bet more than a few models Springfield end up in the back seat crevasses of a minivan.
