Where To Find Maxon Motors After Motor Man's Passing?
« on: January 18, 2019, 11:26:27 AM »

Since the passing of Eldon Shirley (Motorman) has any one looked into finding replacement motors?
I have poked around the web but todate have not found any place that has anything close to what Motorman offered.
I did not buy that many from Eldon but he always came up with a motor for my needs. About 20 over the years that I knew him.
Sure hope to find something to fill the gap!

Unfortunately, I'm not holding my breath.

You can sometimes score a coreless motor on eBay (usually from china), or from some industrial surplus vendor.
If you examine Eldon's eBay feedbacks (as a buyer), you can see some of the surplus outfits he dealt with.  If you are patient and watch their offerings, you might get lucky and score a motor you need.

How would one do that now that he (Motorman) no longer is a seller on EBay?

Easy.  You go to his user page (it remains on eBay) https://www.ebay.com/usr/microlocomotion then look at the sellers he was following.   For more, bring up his feedbacks (by clicking on his feedback number) and then select "feedbacks as buyer" and see what the people he bought from are selling.

Going through his past purchases, I am starting to see his main suppliers. I'm going to do some research over the next few days and post links to them and what they have available.

 :D

I did some of this detective work when he was still in business (and found few), but I didn't really get in-depth (since I could still still get motors from him).  It'll be interesting what you find out.

Well for one, it looks like he was working on his own weight putty:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/50-gram-1-76-oz-50g-High-Purity-99-99-Pure-Bismuth-Bi-Metal-Powder/371575212493

This should have all the working properties of lead without the associated health risks. Also much more dense than tungsten. I have been really unhappy with the tungsten putties I have bought so far - they deform and "melt" even at room temperature, and don't have the modeling-clay like working properties of the old lead putty A-line used to make.

Now I have to find a good carrier that will lock in the bismuth and not deform under normal operating temperatures.

It is 9.78gcm2
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bismuth
So less dense than lead and surely tungsten. Plus it is in powder form so it will be even less dense because of all the air around it. Just like tungsten powder is less dense than solid tungsten.

What is that Walthers Lo-temp stuff made from?  I have a huge brick of it and it melts with a lighter.
EDIT: it is Cerrobend:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood%27s_metal

Cerrobend is 9.4gcm2

Something like a Canon EN-22. I have used those in the past with a good outcome.

Yeah, Max and I found those recently too.  They look to be rejects from the production line, but still fully functional.  If you buy quantities (like 10 or more) , you get make offer and get them for even less than the listed price.  Just be reasonable.

Regardless of the quality, two motors for $2.25 and FREE shipping from China.
And if you think that's too much, make an offer...
How's that even possible, shipping has to cost more than that :?
Makes no sense to me...
