How do I paint this very worn engine?

I’d like to model this B&M RS-3. I’ve got a shell from Skytop models, but I’m not sure how to go about painting it. I have an idea, but I’d like to run it by the collective wisdom before I try and ruin a shell. The plan is to paint the whole shell imitation gold and let it fully harden for several days. Then do the same thing with the black roof. After that I thought I would paint the body maroon, but only let it dry for an hour or so before using a fibreglass brush to scrape some off exposing the gold. Then I thought I could paint some of the decals gray for where the paint has worn off the stripes.

Alternately, I could drybrush gold on top of the maroon, but I don’t have a better solution for the grey stripes.

Anyone have any ideas I haven’t thought of?

I would start with an overall fade. https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=26001.msg268516;topicseen#msg268516

Also, it's an SP unit but it has a lot of useful techniques https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=43864.msg561333#msg561333

Take a look at this 15 pages of awesomeness tips. http://www.mannresearch.com/rr/shawnvann/tommann_weathering72.pdf

Yes, that is an option.  :D How did those areas end up gray?  Is it just exposed primer under the Dulux Gold?

Yup it’s just primer. The layers are primer, gold, maroon, so as it aged the paint wore off. The stripes only had one layer, so they wore to primer whereas the maroon wore to gold.
