Meet half way?  On the close up shot, I agree, every time I look at them, the chain looks bigger and bigger (also aided by knowing there are smaller chains available).
However look at my first shot above and compare the first two tanks.  From that distance, I think the lack of chains on the second tank stands out more than the oversized chains on the first tank.   

Of course this is all subjective.  But maybe I'll take up Mark G on that offer for a bit of smaller chain. 


Or...  we could try 3D printing some chain now too!

3D printed might be a very good idea (or at least give it a try).

I agree with you that absence of tie-downs would not be the best choice. That is why I suggested using a de-fuzzed (thick) black thread.

BTW, what was wrong with the MTL photoetched depictions of the tie-downs (I don't remember what was said in the other related thread, and it is rather lengthy by now).

Can you do anything about the end of the gun barrel? Now that you’ve done all this extra work it’s solidness stands out. Are they capped or something in transport? If not a small drill and some black paint may help the situation.

I looked at them back when I first got the set and saw them plugged.  Otherwise I probably would have tried to drill them out. 
Maybe a dab of grey or white will work.  I feel like using black will just imply it is an open barrel.

Gotcha. 

As far as I know, there isn't anything wrong with the MTL etch.  But since it is just a solid silhouette of the chain, I opted to give an actual chain the first attempt.

I have to agree with Peteski .. even at 3 feet it looks too large.. thats about the size of an anchor chain for a destroyer .. I found some braided wire in Hobby Lobby that might work .. I'll post a pic when I get one tied down ..

Well Mark, I have to strongly disagree with you here.  In some instances (like your tank tie-downs) I think that missing (or slightly inaccurate) depiction would look more realistic than a grossly out-of-scale item.  That chain IMO ruins the realism of otherwise very finely detailed and weathered model.  To me using thick black thread (dragged through some wax to smooth out the fuzz) would look much more realistic than the 27 links/inch chain.

Rigging chain tie downs is a B!
Nonetheless, I think it's totally worth
Chains are definitely over-sized.
Mark they have come up very well. Have you considered painting the rubber blocks on the tracks.
Tamiya makes a very nice Rubber Black paint.
I am sure it would help the look also.

Chains are definitely over-sized.  We'll do one with the etched tie-downs for comparison, but I'm pretty confident these oversized chains will still look much more realistic than the etched non-chains. 

@Mark W A-Line offers pre-blackened 40-link-per-inch chain, and it's available from Walthers. It's nice-looking stuff - I use it before on my layout.

That S2 looks great, Wolf! It sure looks like those Arnold models rival the Atlas model in the looks department. It almost appears indistinguishable to me, at least at first glance.

The conopy visors look great too! Did you already give a tutorial on those?
