Chains are definitely over-sized.  We'll do one with the etched tie-downs for comparison, but I'm pretty confident these oversized chains will still look much more realistic than the etched non-chains.

For those not following the 3D printer thread, here's some of my efforts in the last few days.  The tipper cars are Nn3 with functioning link and pin couplers and separate hoppers that can be staged tipped and are easier to paint. They are riding on Fox Valley 33" Z/ 24" Nn3 metal wheels.  The long ones are .85" o'all length and the short ones are .77" length.  They are identical in all other respects.  There may be some edits to them but in general I'm quite happy with the tippers but also with the 3D resin process, material and finish.

On the left is the single shorter hopper.  The balance are the longer length, staged together for comparison.

Very realistic backdrop.  I like it!     
The cars look good too.

I added some rust on my NS 4825. Even those these never existed I wanted to get that look that some of the Conrail GE's had before they were painted into full NS.

Oh great, another new trend...yarn mine!  Just great, now you will need all the supporting equipment, yarn hoppers, buildings to process the yarn, maybe even a sweater factory, and or course you need a new type of track cleaning car to collect all the fuzz that will be all over your tracks.  You will only need one locomotive though as the loads will be very light.

Yes all of those mainly oils for the rust.

I'll be finishing it up with a light coat of dust along the bottom with the airbrush and adding a little bit of streaking on the fuel tank for fuel spills.

A couple of days ago I ordered some 45 per inch chain.  When it comes in I'll give it a look and let you know how it looks.

Merry Christmas Everyone ..

I have some M113 1/144 models .. I wanted to convert one to an M577 Command Post vehicle .. these are fairly close to 1/160 size .. only 3mm too long, and just about the right width .. 
Anyway -- here is the result ..





And --- I got a new toy for the layout

Well Mark, I have to strongly disagree with you here.  In some instances (like your tank tie-downs) I think that missing (or slightly inaccurate) depiction would look more realistic than a grossly out-of-scale item.  That chain IMO ruins the realism of otherwise very finely detailed and weathered model.  To me using thick black thread (dragged through some wax to smooth out the fuzz) would look much more realistic than the 27 links/inch chain.

Meet half way?  On the close up shot, I agree, every time I look at them, the chain looks bigger and bigger (also aided by knowing there are smaller chains available).
However look at my first shot above and compare the first two tanks.  From that distance, I think the lack of chains on the second tank stands out more than the oversized chains on the first tank.   

Of course this is all subjective.  But maybe I'll take up Mark G on that offer for a bit of smaller chain. 


Or...  we could try 3D printing some chain now too!

Can you do anything about the end of the gun barrel? Now that you’ve done all this extra work it’s solidness stands out. Are they capped or something in transport? If not a small drill and some black paint may help the situation.
